WILLIAM S. FINLEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
COUPON-SLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 25,1913.
Application filed May 3, 1912. Serial No. 694,977.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. FINLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupon-Slips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to coupon slips, bei g an article particularly adapted for use in connection with trading stamp systems, so called, in which one or more stamps are given by a tradesman when purchases are made, the object of the invention being to provide an improved device by means of which said stamps may be collected and preserved in convenient manner, by the buyer, until the stamps are redeemed.
Instead of providing stamps which are gummed on the back, and adapted to be stuck in a book or the like as customary, I provide a card having thereon strips of gum spaced apart proper distances to accommodate different rows of stamps, and the stamps are without mucilage and may be readily attached to the card by wetting the stamp and sticking the same on the gummed part or strip.
The card may form the leaf of a book if desired. Inasmuch as the coupons are not gummed they are much more easily handled than if they were and the narrow strips of gum avoid, to a large extent, sticking together of the leaves or cards. The distance from one strip of gum to the next is arranged to be the same as the length of the coupon, thereby occupying the minimum of space necessary to expose to view the entire face of the coupon attached thereto, and the number of coupons on the leaf or card indicated at once, each card or leaf being made to hold a given number of coupons.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a plan View of a card or leaf constructed according to the invention.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the card or leaf, to which is applied parallel strips of gum 7, to which the coupons 8 may be attached in the manner above indicated. The upper edges of the various strips of gum are spaced apart a distance equal to the length of the coupons, so that each coupon may be attached at one end, by wetting the same, to a strip, and when a suflicient number areattached the whole face of the card or leaf will be covered with the coupons.
As stated, the narrow strips of gum reduce the liability of the leaves or cards sticle ing together and the absence of gum on the coupons enables them to be stacked and handled without the trouble and inconvenience incident to stickingtogether, such as commonly occurs with packages of gunnned stamps.
I claim:
A card or leaf having a surface area adapted to be covered by a given number of coupons, and provided with narrow parallel strips of gum across said surface to which the coupons may be attached in rows, the strips of gum being spaced apart a distance substantially equal to one of the dimensions of the coupons, and the length of the strips being substantially equal to a given multiple of another dimension of the coupons, whereby the number of coupons is indicated by the surface or rows covered.
In testimony whereof, I do affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. FINLEY.
