Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915.
Application filed August 1, 1914. Serial No. 854,521.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD ERNEST BERN- HARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Northfields, St. Mary Cray, Kent, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Marking Show-Cards or Tickets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means by which cardboard window tickets or show cards can be produced by the use of type furnished with cutting edges. I
The method of operation is to lay a sheet of colored paper on the cardboard constituting the ticket; the type is then brought into contact with the paper, and pressure applied by means of the press herein described. This causes the cutting edge of the type to cutout the characters or letters required, and to embed them firmly into the sheet of cardboard, in such a manner that they will remain in position without the use of glue, gum or other adhesive.
According to this invention I provide a hold for the type which slides in grooves cut in stops at either end of the moving plate of the press, and I support smaller type than those of the largest size which the holder is adapted to carry by means of spring clips which clip over the sides of the holder.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the press. Fig. 2 is a section on the line A A Fig. 1 and shows one of the largest type in position in the holder. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 but showing a small type supported by clips while Figs. 4 and 5 are a side View and a plan of a clip.
The moving plate a of the press has at each end a stop 6 in which is cut a groove to receive a holder consisting of a rectangular frame a on the back and front of which rest shoulders cl of the type c of largest size. For holding type of smaller size 1 employ spring clips f which embrace the back and front of the holder as shown in Fig. 3 while their inner ends lie beneath the shoulder cl of the smaller type c.
WVhat I claim is Ina press adapted for making show cards EDWARD ERNEST BERNIIARD.
