To all wt om it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS G. SAXTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Re lating to Clamp Devices, of whichthe following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices or means for securing articles, such as papers or paper slips upon or against a support or back.

For the purpose of illustration, I have, in the accompanying drawings, shown and herein described one form of device embodving my invention.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a support or back showing a clamping or slip carrying device, embodying my invention, secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the support and the clamping device and the index or namecarrying plate. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the clamp device and display plate, detached. Fig. 4 is a trans erse section on the line 41 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of the support or back showing the attaching means forthe clamp carried thereby. In the drawing, 1 indicates a suitable support or back adapted to support, on at least one of its faces, articles, as for instance, paper slips. The support or back is preferably formed from sheet metal, in order to reduce the cost of materials and labor.

1 indicates a strap carried Tloy the support or back-1L This strap 1 is. preferably formed by cutting or slitting the support or back 1 on two transverse lines parallel to each other and then pressing or elevating the metal between the two slits or cuts outwardly on that face of the leaf to which the clamping device is to be secured, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

2 indicates a clamping device preferably formed from resilient strip metal. The

lower or support engaging end of the clamp termediate its ends, as shown at 2 in order that its free or slip engaging end may operate directly against the support or back 1. The clamp 2 is applied to the support or back 1 by sliding the lower end thereof through the strap 1 far enough so that its outwardly curved portion will rest on or engage the upper edge of the strap 1 By this arrangement of the device 2 relative to the strap 1, the former will have a relatively large bearing engagement with the sup ort 1. The strap 1 is bent relative to the support 1 on parallel l nes and engages with the opposite parallel edges of the clamping device 2 to maintain the latter in a vertical position at all times.

In the normal operation of the spring clamp in inserting and removing paper clips. it will be seen that the inner face of the strap 1 will operate as a fulcrum for the clamp 1 2" hat said strap 1* will also operate to hold that po tion of the clamp 52 which extends th ough the strap out. and can only be attached and detached by sl d ng it in a direct on substantially parallel with the face of the support 1.

These devices preferably comprise a projection 3 carried by one of these parts, preferably the su port 1. immed ately below and centrally of the strap 1, and a recess or opening 3 formed in the support engaging end of the clamp device 2. The proiection 3 is preferably formed by indenting the metal of the s p o t or back 1 from the opposite face to which the s ring clamp is to be secured. These interlocking devices 3 permit the readv attachment to and de tachment of the clamp device 2 from the support 1. it being understood that each time the device 2 is applied or removed enough force must be used to cause a springing of the metal strip to permit its free end to ride over the proiection 3 The lower free end of the device 2 is bent outwardlv, as shown at 3. to facilitate this o e ation. To those skilled in the art-of masking devices'of theclass described, manyalterations in construction and widely differing embodiments and applications of my in vention will suggest themselves, Without departing from the spirit andscope of the claim. My disclosures and the description therein are purely illustrative, and are not intended to be in any sense limiting.

What l claim is In a filing appliance, the combination of "ilback formed from sheet metal and slitted 'said strap being extending along two parallel lines to form a strap, the elevated relative to the back, a clamp'devme formed from a strip of resilient metal, the upper end ofsaid device being movable toward and from the back and the lower endof theclamp device through the strap and having;

bearing contact with the adjacent face of the'back .and the strap operating todetachahly hold the clamp device in close contact therewith and permitting its attachment to the back and detachment there from only when moved in a directionparallel to it and interlocking means between the lower end of the clamp device and the said back coiiperating with the strap for engagingvthe clampdevice but permitting disengagement of the device in a direction parallel to the back.
