Description
April 1 1938. QARITCHIE 11 17 HOLDER FOR MEMORANDUM PADS Filed Nov. 1. 1934 FIG. 3 24 2a IN V2 N TOR GAP/TCH/E A TTORNEP Patented Apr. 19, 1938 UNITED STATES 2,114,477 HOLDER FOR MEMORANDUM PADS George A. Ritchie, Brooklyn, N. Y., assignor to Bell Telephone Laboratories, Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application November 1, 1934, Serial No. 750,917
2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in holders for memorandum pads and the like, and more particularly to a holder for telephone toll tickets.
It is an improvement over a type of holder disclosed in Patent 1,954,067 to Herbert N. R. Carlson, dated February 10, 1934.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved holder of this type.
According to this invention a pad holder is provided in which the pad is held at a number of widely separated points through the clamping action of a combination of plates movable relatively to each other under the tension of a spring, with means carried by one of the plates for holding the pad against lengthwise and sidewise movements on the supporting plate, means being provided for guiding one of the plates in its movement with respect to the other plate for holding an abutting lug on the top sheet of the pad, the relative movement of the plates and the pressure of the abutting lug on the successive top sheets of the pad being controlled by the tension of the spring.
Other novel features of the invention and advantages will appear from the following description and by the claims appended thereto, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which,
Fig. 1 is a perspective assembly view showing a pad in position on the pad holder and the pad holder in position on its support;
Fig. 2 is a top view; and
Fig. 3 is a side assembly view shown with the pad removed from the holder.
As shown in drawing a plate 9 is hinged at one end to a bracket II which, in' turn, engages a slot ID in the upright support l2, the bracket being formed with oppositely disposed lugs such as I3 for preventing its lateral movement in the slot ll! of support I2.
To the underside of plate 9 is secured as by rivets l4, l5 and I6, shown in Fig. 2, a cross-bar I 1 formed at its end portions with lugs I8 for engaging the slots 20 in the sides or flanged portions of a U-shaped base plate or retainer member l9 straddling the plate 9 from its underside. The retainer member I9 is formed with a portion 2| which projects beyond the free end of the plate 9 and is bent upwardly at right angles at its extreme end to serve as an abutment for retaining the pad P against lengthwise movement on the plate, the sides or flange portions of the U-shaped member I9 being provided for holding the pad against lateral movement on the plate 9.
A spring 22 mounted concentric to hinge pin 23 has one end abutting against the bracket H and its other end against the plate 9 for exerting pressure thereon as to force the U-shaped member I!) downwardly for yieldably holding a projecting lug 24 carried by one of the flanges of U-shaped member 19 against the successive top sheet TS of pad P and against plate 9 as shown in Fig. 3 upon the removal of the pad due to the engagement of the projecting portion 21 of U-shaped member 19 with the surface of the shelf on which the upright sup-port I2 is secured as by screw 25 shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
In the use of the holder of the invention the pad'P as shown in Fig. l is placed on the plate 9 with its cardboard backing L1 engaged between the plate 9 and the extension 2| of the U-shaped member i9 and with the lug 24 of the U-shaped member engaging the top sheet TS of the pad. The tension of spring 22 thus acts on the plate 9 and U-shaped member l9 which due to its abutment at one end with the surface of the shelf is forced downwardly at its other end for engaging the lug 24 on the surface of top sheet TS as shown in Fig. 1, thus effectively holding the pad in place on the holder upon any effort tending to displace it when a sheet is removed from the pad, the lug [8 in slot 2!] of U-shaped member l9 serving to guide these plates during their relative movement from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fig. 3.
This combination of parts has been found to afford maximum convenience and accessibility for the successive removal of the sheets from the pad while providing a device cheap to manufacture and efiicient in operation.
It is understood that minor changes may be made to the invention without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A pad holder comprising a support, a bracket, a supporting plate for a pad hinged tosaid bracket, said bracket having means for engaging said support for supporting said plate in an oblique relation with respect to the surface of a shelf, a base plate having side portions extending on each side of said supporting plate for holding the pad against sidewise movement on said supporting plate, said plates being movable relative to each other, means carried by said supporting plate engaging means carried by the base plate for guiding them upon such relative movement, resilient means for yieldably forcing one end of said supporting plate against said base plate for clamping the cardboard backing of with the surface of a shelf, the'flangedportions;
holding the pad against sidewise movement on said supporting plate, interengagingmeans' car-- ried by said plates for holding them against 1ongitudinal movement relative to each other but permitting the movement thereof at right angles relative to said longitudinal movement, resilient means for yieldably holding the free end of said supporting plate against said base plate and the latter plate against the surface of a shelf for clamping the cardboard backing of the pad between said plates, and means carried by one of said flanged portions for engaging the next sheet of the pad upon the removal of the top sheet followed by the right angle relative movement of said: plates: under: the tension of said resilient means.
