STAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2 1, 1908.
Application filed November 12, 1907. I Serial No. 401,816.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN KIAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Stamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to stamps, and is particularly useful in connection with hand printin stamps.
' An 0 ject of the invention is to provide a simple, inex ensive and efficient rintin stam whic is manually operab e, an whic has means whereby it can be identified instantly, without necessitating the examination of the rintin face thereof.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a stampihaving a resilient body to render the .ma ng of an impression with the stamp, easy and positive, and which carries a removable identifying card 'so held that both sides of the card are visible.
The invention consists in the constructionand combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter, and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawin s forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts .in all the views, and in which v Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stamp; Fig. 2 is a'longitudinal section of the stamp; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section ofa stamp of modified form; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a stamp of still further modified form, and Fig. 5 is'a transverse section on the .line 55 p of Fig. 4.
Before proceeding to a more detailed ex-' planation of my invention, itshould be understood that the same is designed particularly to obviate the difficulty commonto the stamps in general use to-day, of properly identifying the stamps without exannning the printing faces or making a trial impression with the stamp. When alarge number of different stamps are used, the fact that it is impossible to identify each stamp at a lance, often results in annoyance, conasion, and loss of time. Each stam of my invention can be reco 'zed instant y, as it is provided with an ife ii tifying card having inscribed thereon, words, symbols or the characters which the stamp rints. At the same time I rovide a pre erred form of stamp, the ho y of which is fashioned from resilient strip material, so that in making an impression with the stamp there is a give to the body which permits the automatic adjustment of the printing face, and which obviates jar and concussion in applying the stamp, consequently resulting .1n saving the printing face from excessive wear.
Referring more ings, Figs. 1' an show the "preferred form of my invention, the body of which is fashioned from a strip of resilient material such as springsteel, iron or the like. The stri of material is bent to form the sides 1 an the to 2 of thestamp body. Near the center of t e to 2, the material is formed into a 100 constituting a handle 3, the sides of which ie adjacent near the top 2, and are separated toward 'the end of the handle remote from the top, so that a handle is formed which can be easily rasped by the hand of the user. Near the ower ends, the sides 1 have inward plicatures or bends 4 particularly-to the drawcertain whichrender the sides resilient in a direction transverse of the top 2. The ends of the strip-material are bent inwardly beyond-the sides 1 and are arranged in .one plane, as is shownmost clearly in Figs. 1 and 2; The base 5 is secured to the-ends 10 of the material forming the body of the stamp, in any. suitable manner, for instance, by means of screws 6. The printing face 7 is secured to the base, in any convenient manner, for instance, by gluing, cementing or the like.
The sides 1 are provided with longitudinal slots 8 therethrough, which are adaptedto receive an identifying member 9 consisting of a metal plate, a card or the like. The
identifying card 9 is removably held within; the slots 8 and extends between the sides and between the top and bottom. of they Thusboth faces of the card are stam bod visib e aml may have inscribed thereon the identifying characters. stood that this construction. easy insertion and removal of t ing card. The indentations 4 of ermits the the sides 1 permit the edge of the card to be as ed etween the fingers when it is desire to place the card om the stamp body.
In the modified form of my printi face 7 is removably mounted be; tween t e'sides of the stamp body so that it can be changed or replaced at will. For this purpose, the base is provided with recesses llat the ends thereof which are e identify- It will be underinvention .shown in Fig. 3, the base 5 which carries the formed to receive the ends of the stamp body. The ends 10 are shorter in this form and the sides can be sprung apart to permit 'tlaie'removal of the ends from the recesses 11.
, exception of dentations of which upon the top.
It be understood thatthe stamp-body top is flexible and can give when pressure is applied by means of the handle However, the, flexibility of the top is limited by the engagement of the sides of the handle at the top and is further'limited by the identicard 9 which prevents the bending inward of the top beyond a certain" point. The resiliency of the stamp body lies to a considerable degree in the sides '1, the-inpermit the, sides to bend as the stamp is pressed against the surface upon which it is desired to print.
In the form of the stamp shown in Figs.
4 and 5, the body, which may be fashioned from wood, metal or other suitable material, possesses substantially no resiliency and ednsists merely of the top, the sides and the base, all the arts being integral with the he handle?) which lSe removably mounted in any convenient manner The sides of the stamp body are provide ith the slots 8 which permit the insertion of the identifying card 9. In this form of the device I prefer to provide the base 5 with a recess in which the printing face 7 is counter-sunk and mounted in posi tion by gluing, ceirentin or the like.
. Having thus described. my invention, 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters l?'atent:
1. A stamp, having a body provided with means for its manual operation and an open ing through. the body, and a flat identifying card, said body having means adjacent to said opening for holding said card within said 1 opening whereby said card is visible from opposite sides of said body, said card having identifying marks on the opposite faces.
' In a stamp, a body aving printing means and an opening through the body, said body further having means for its manual operation and slots connecting with said even and an identifying card adapted to across said opening; in a stamp, a bodv having printing l sides, said sides having slots,
means and a transverse openingtherefurther having means for having identifying marks at both faces thereof.
. 4. A stamp, comprising sides, a top having a handle,-a printing base secured to said and an identifying plate removably mounted in said slots and arranged between said sides, said base and said top.
5. A istamp' comprising a body formed from resilient material, means for its operation, printing means, member, said body having the sides indent l ed, and at the sides, slots extending across ably arranged in said slots and eX- the indentations, said slots being adapted to receive the identifying member whereby the indentations permit the member to be grasped with thefingers to remove it.
6. A stamp,;fashioned from a strip of'resilient material bent to form indented sides, a top, and a handle at said top, said sides carryinga printing base and having slots adapt ed to receive an identifying member.
7. A stain fashioned from a strip of resilient material bent to form sides, a top, and a handle at said to dented and having s ots, a printing base secured to said sides, and an identifying card reniovably arranged in said slots.
8. A stamp, fashioned from a strip of re silient material bent to form sides, a top, and a handle at said top, said. sides beingindented and having slots, said sides at the lower ends thereof having inwardly disposed err-- tremities, a printing base having end recesses adapted removably to receive said extremities of said sides, and an identifying member removably arranged in said slots.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
