To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that LJAMns H. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered new and useful Improvements in Holders for Changeable Type-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.

.My invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in holders for stenciling' and stamping type-blocks. Such hold ers are commonly provided with fixed angular flanges on their longitudinal edges which engage the base flanges of the type-blocks, the type-blocks being either slid into place from one end of the holder or compressed or pinched into bowed form to permit the insertion of their baseflanges under the flanges of the holder. The former method is inconvenient when applicable and is inapplicable where changeable type-blocks are to be inserted between type fixed on the holder as is frequently the case. The latter method is also inconvenient and requires flexible or soft rubber blocks which tend to pull loose from the holder owing to the viscosity of the ink used, causing the type to adhere to the surface being marked.

My purpose is to facilitate the mounting of the type-blocks on the holder without resorting to either of the methods above referred to.

My improved holder consists of a base or holder proper, having an inturned retaining flange on one of its longitudinal edges and a locking device, such as a resilient snap flange, on its other longitudinal edge, associated with a type-plate having a plain edge or flange on one edge adapted toseat in the inturned retaining flange of the base and an inturned retaining flange on the other edge adapted to be engaged bysaid locking means.

Other novel features of construction Wlll "appear from the following description.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1' is a perspective showing my invention applied to a hand stamp; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same along the, line 11-11 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of a type-blocl i mounted in the type-plate, the latter being shown in elevation; Fig. 4: is a broken perspective showing my invention applied to a rocker stamp; Fig. 5 is a cross section or" the same along the line VV in Fig. l, and Fig. 6 is a perspective of the form of type-plate shown in Figs. l and 5.

The following is a detailed description of the drawings, reference being first had to Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

A is the base of the holder, which may be of any material and-contour, but which in a hand-stamp is usually a block of wood provided with a handle 13.

One of the lateral edges of block A is provided with an inturned retaining flange 1 which may be conveniently formed on a metal plate C attached to the side of block A. The opposite edge of block A is provided with a locking device, such as the curved resilient snap-flange 2 which may be formed on the metal plate D attached to the opposite side of block A. The flange Qis cut away from the top to form a recess dextending down somewhat below the top of block A and communicating with a transverse recess 4: in the top of said block.

v E is a metal type-plate having one inturned lateral retaining flange 5, similar to flange l, and having the other edge preferably provided with a plain flange 6 low enough to be inserted into retaining flange 1.

7 is a lever secured to the bottom of typeplate E- F F are the type-blocks, commonly of rubber or other suitable material, the bases thereof being preferably of a harder or stiffer nature than their impression faces. Such type-blocks are usually provided with lateral base-flanges 8-8.

In assembling the device, I first place the selected type-blocks F-F on type-plate E, one flange 8 of the blocks being inserted under the retaining flange 5 of said plate and the other flange 8 of the blocks abut-ting against the plain flange 6 when such is provided. The flange Got the type-plate E is now inserted in the retaining flange 1 of the block A and the retaining flange 5 of said type-plate snapped down into engagement with the locking flange 2 of the block A. The type-blocks and type-plate are now mounted on the blocl: A as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

To release the type-plate from the block A, all that is required is an upward push on the lever 7, disengaging the flange 5 from the locking flange, whereupon the type-plate may be'freely lifted from the stamp.

The arrangement of type on the typeplate may then be changed and the typeplate remounted on the block A for further use, or a plurality of type-plates with various arrangements of type-blocks may be provided for mounting on the block A as required.

In Figs. &, 5 and 6, I have shown my invention applied to a rocker stamp, also illustr'ating its use in connection with fixed type. In said figures A is the curved faceplate of the stamp and B the wooden or other handle connecting the ends of the face-plate.

F F represent fixed type cemented or otherwise secured to the face plate A Associated therewith are the changeable typeblocks .FF which are mounted in the typeplate E mounted. in turn on the face plate A For convenience I have shown the retaining flange 1 and the locking flange 2 formed by bending the lateral edges of a bed-plate Gr secured to the face of plate A The interlocking of the type-plate E with the flanges 1 and 2 of the bed-plate G is identical with the operation described in relation to Figs. 1, 2 and 3. However, as a. modification especially adapted to rocker stamps, I prefer to substitute for the lever 7 a depending stud 7, fixed to the bottom of type-plate E and extending through registering holes 3 and bed-plate Ga An up ward push on stud 7 serves to release the type-plate E.

It is thus evident that varying size or quality marks,-in connection with. a fixed brand or other mark, may be stamped .or stenciled with the same holder, thus efi'ecting a great economy in stamps and in the time required for marking.

What I desire to claim is In a holder for changeable type-blocks, a base carrying a resilient edge-flange extending along one of the longitudinal sides thereof; a type-plate operatively correlated with said base and provided with an edgefiange extending along one of the longitudinal sides thereof and engageable with one edge of the type-blocks and with said resilient flange; and a projecting lug carried by said type-plate and adapted to be grasped byv the fingers of the operator.
