BOOK-MARK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,768, dated March 19, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRIETTA L. MEHRER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Book- Mark, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved book-mark, which is very simple and durable in construction, and serves to indicate not only the page of a book but also the line and word desired to be marked.

The invention'consists of abook-mark provided with a slide carrying a pointer.

The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims. 7

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the improvement; and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the same on the line no a: of Fig. 1.

The improved book-mark A is provided with a plate, B, preferably made of one piece of sheet metal or paper in the shape shown, so as to form the two arms 0 and D, of which the latter fits into a recess of the former and is secured at one end to one end of the arm 0.

The arm D is provided with a slot, E, so as to form guideways on which is held to slide up and down a slide, F, on which is pivoted a pointer or indicator, G, of any desired shape.

The book-mark is used as follows: The arms 0 and D are slightly spread apart, so that the arm 0 can be placed under and the arm D over the leaf to be marked, the edge of the leaf resting against the joint of the arms 0 and D. The plate B can be placed on the leaf either from the top, bottom, or side, as desired; preferably, however, from the side,

as shown in Fig. 1. The arms thus clamp the leaf, and the plate B is thus secured on the leaf with the arm D on the side to be marked. The slide is now moved on the arm D and the pointer is turned until the latter points with its end directly on the word or figure to be marked, so that when the book is taken up again the leaf is easily found by the arm D and the respective sentence or mark is pointed out very prominently by the pointer, so that the reader has no trouble to find the stoppingplace.

It is understood that the plate B may be made in any desired shape, the main point being the slide and the pointer on the slide.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As a new article of manufacture, a bookmark provided with a slide, and a pointer pivoted on the said slide, substantially as shown and described.

2. A book-mark comprising two arms connected with each other at one end, a slide held to slide 011 one of the said arms, and a pointer pivoted on the said slide, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a book-mark, the combination, with an arm, of a slide fitted to slide on the said arm, and a pointer pivoted on the said slide, substantially as shown and described.

at. In a book-mark, the combination, with a slotted arm and a second slotted arm secured at one end on the said first-named arm and fitting in its slot, of a slide held to slide in the said second slotted arm and a pointer adapted to turn on the said slide, substantially as shown and described.
