Description

CHARLES B. DIGKINSON, OF BROOKLYN, NW YORK.
l Letters Patent No. 78,192, dated M'ay 26, 1868; antedateol May 18, 18.68.
COMBINED ARM-REST AND PAPER-GUTTER.
@In dgemle mmh tu it time tetets rtmt :mh mating mi nf its mme,v
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES, B. DIcKINsoN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Combined Arm-Rest and Paper-Cutter; 'and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the Vsaid invention, reference being had to .the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, whereinn f Figure -1 is a plan of the said'iuiprovements in the position of an arm-rest.
F Figure 2 is a side vewgofthe :ame as applied to a. book'; and n Figure 3 is a plan of the article as folded and adapted to use as a paper-cutter, or as a ruler;
Sin-f ilar letters denote the same parts. i
Herc-tofore, a long piece of thin sheet metal has been employed es apaper-cutter, or edge against whichA paper can'be torn, and' accountants and others have had an arm-rest madeof a thin piece of wood'to slip into the book, and with a thicker portion at the bottom, outside the book,'iformng an armrest"to facilitate Writing near the bottom of the page.` f f These arm-rests-generally are large, andcumbersome for thecontracted space of a. desk, and cannot be used for anything else. n .Y 4 .I
The nature' of my said invention consists in aconbined paper-cutter and `arinrest, that can be used for, either purpose very readily, or maybe used also 'es a ruler. lThe said article een also be foldedso as to occupy but little more space than an'ordinary paper-cutter. Y l l In the drawing, a represents a thimmetallic plete, that should have a holent 6,so as'to hung up, the metal being of suioient width, length, and stilfness to, answer the desired purpose.
, c is the arm-rest, formed of wood or other suitable meterial. The arm-rest c and paper-cutter a are connected by a screw or rivet at d, upon which the parts can turn so that the paperfcutter may stand' at right angles, or nearly so, for insertion between the leaves ofa book, to sustain' the arm-rest atthe foot of the page, v or the'cutter may be turned so as to coincido, or nearly so, with the armrest, as seenin iig. 3.
The paper-cutter a :hay be usedes a cutter or straight-e fe for tearing paper when in either of the posi? l A tion shown but when in the'position shown in' iig. 3, it will bethe most convenient,os the armrest stiens the paper-cutter.v I u The edge e e ofthe rest c forms a 'good ruler, and, being bevelled, as shown in iig. 2, prevents the ink blotting by running under the edge of the ruler. l
My aforesaid article is very cheap, strong, compact, and emi and others.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl The combined arm-rest and paper-cutter, made substantiallyl as and for the purposes set forth. 1
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this twenty-second day of October, A.`D. 14867.
' C. B. DIGKINSON.
