BOOKMARKING DEVICE Filed March 18, 1950 Attori/megs Patented Feb. 12, 1952 2,585,421 BooK MARKING DEVICE Estelle T. Armand ne Dumais, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Application March is, 195o, serial No. 150,489
The present invention relates to a. book marking device and more particularly to a book mark,- ing rule to be used in conjunction with an instruction book or sheet of the type used for example in manual embroidery or knitting works.
It is known that in such instruction books the working procedure is usually given in abbreviated form, and such abbreviated instructions take generally a relatively long time to perform.
Accordingly, the main object of the present invention is to provide an indicator means for instruction book of the type hereabove described in order to readily point out at any time the desired instructions which it is wished to refer to.
Another important object, according to the present invention, is the provision of an indicator device which is readily movable over the entire area of an instruction sheet in order to point out any printed instructions on said sheet.
Still another important object, according to the present invention, is the provision of a book marking device comprising a pair of elongated opposite arms adapted to enclose one or more sheets of a book, one of said arms provided with Another object, according to the present in- A vention, is the provision of a book marking device which will not take much space and may be conveniently stored away after use.
Another object, according to the present invention, is the provision of a book marking device of the type hereabove described further provided with one or more graduated scales in order to measure up the work which is being done.
Another object, according to the present invention, is the provision of a book marking device of the character hereabove described further provided with a plurality of holes of increasing diameter and of standard sizes such as used by knitters in order to ascertain the diameter of their knitting needles.
Yet another important object, according to the present invention, is the provision of a book marking device which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
The foregoing and other important objects according to the present invention, will become more apparent during the following disclosure and by referring to the drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book marking device, according to the invention, in conjunction with an instruction sheet;
2 claims. (c1. 11s-119) Figure 2 is a plan view of the device according to the invention;
Figure 3 is a side view of the same in closed position;
Figure 4 is a side view of the same in open position; and
Figure 5 is a cross-section along line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like elements throughout, the book marking device of the present invention comprises two elongated arms I and 2 preferably rectangular in shape and made of plastic material or the like.
Said arms I and 2 are of such a length as to extend across the whole width of an instruction sheet A in conjunction with which the indicating device is to be used.
The arms I and 2 are preferably made of a one-piece strip of sheet material being hinged together at the circularly bent portion 3. Thus, the arms I and 2 are adapted to come in contact with each other and to describe an arcuate movement away from each other as shown in Figure 4.
In order to facilitate the actuation of said movement, the circularly bent portion 3 has preferably cut out portions 4 outwardly bent to form finger gripping means for the book marking device according to the invention. Said portions 4 are preferably parallel with each other when the arms I and 2 are in contact as shown in Figure 3. When pressed upon inwardly, as shown in Figure 4, they will cause the outward arcuate movement of the arms I and 2.
The portions 4 having been cut out from the circularly bent portion 3, openings have been formed adjacent thereto, said openings may be used for the insertion of a U-shaped leaf spring 5, its yoke portion positioned inside the circularly bent portion 3, and its legs contacting the outer face of the arms I and 2 adjacent the openings. Said U-shaped leaf spring 5 will reinforce the hinge of the book marking device according to the invention, and will at the same time urge the two arms I and 2 together in order to insure a better grip of the device upon the sheet A.
The upper member I which will normally be positioned on the top face of the sheet A, is provided with an elongated window 6 extending longitudinally of and over the major portion of said upper member I and of such a width as to permit the showing of only one printed line of the sheet A at a time. The upper arm I is further provided wth a marginal rabbet-like recess 1 along both its inner longitudinal edges for receiving the downwardly and` inwardly bent ends 8 of the slidable indicator 9 extending across and over said upper arm I. The indicator 9 is slidable over the major portion of the length of the arm l and is provided with a suitable window l through which may appear a small portion of the printed line of the sheet A showing through the window 6 of the upper arm I. One or more edges of the window lo are provided with a suitable pointer II, preferably in triangular form, and integrally dependent from the indicator 9. Thus, by moving the indicator 9 along the window 6 of the upper arm I any desired word or set of words may be readily pointed out by .means of the pointer element*I I! of the indicator 9.
It is to be noted that the rabbet-like recesses 8 stop short of both ends of the upper arm I in order to provide abutments I2 for preventing the removal of the slidable indicator 9 from said upper arm I.
Thus, it is seen that the book marking device,
according to the invention, may be positioned across a sheet A in parallel relationship with its printed lines in order to show any one of said printed lines through the elongated window 5. Thereafter, any word or set of words on said printed line, set orf by the window 6, may be pointed out by means of the slidable indicator 9. The marking device, because oi' its leaf spring 5, has a goed grip on the sheet A and will not acci dentally slip ofi the same.
Y When it is desired to change from one line to another, the marking device is simply grasped, as shown in Figure 4, at the finger gripping portions t, to open the same, is moved slidabiy and longitudinally of said sheet A and released again when the succeeding desired printed line shows through the window B. A
1t is to be noted that when the sheet A forms part of an instruction book the indicator device can still be used by enclosing one or more sheets of the saine until the free ends of the arms I and 2 contact the bound portion of said book. It is to bev noted that the book marking device may also be used at a right hand or left hand side page of one such instruction book by reversing the same, the only diierence being that the pointer element II will lie below the pointed words in one ease and above the same in the other case.
The book marking device, according to the invention, may be further used as a scale to measure the amount of work knitted, and for that purpose is provided with two marginal scales I3 preferably graduated in inches, centimeters or the like and extending at both longi tudinal edges of the upper arm i. The graduation marks of one such -scale are plotted in reverse order and upside down relatively to the graduation marks of the other. Thus, there will always be provided a scale increasing from left to right available to the user whether the marking device, according to the invention, is used with the left hand side or right hand side sheet of the instruction book.
'Ihe book marking device, according to the invention, may be further provided with a plus rality of circular holes I4 of increasing diameter made through the central portion of the lower arm 2 in order to be in alignment with the central window 9 of the upper arm I. Thus, when the book marking device is not used as such it may serve as a means to ascertain the diameter of the knitting needles in the same Way as the regular device provided for the same.
From the foregoing it is seen that the book marking device, according to the present invention, will form a simple and an easily manipib lated aid for knitters that will greatly simplify their work.
The device may be further used as a scale for measuring up the knitted work without having to remove said device from the instruction sheet, therefore, thedevice combines a scale and a marking indicator -in one simple instrument.
While a preferred embodiment, according to the invention, has been., illustrated and described it is understood that various modications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention I claim:
1. A book marking device comprising a pair of opposed elongated iiat arms hinged together at one end,` spring means to urge said arms together, one arm having an elongated window extending longitudinally thereof over the major part of its length, an indicator slidably movable over said arm parallel with and along the whole length of said elongated window to cooperate with the same, said indicator having a window registering with the elongated window of said arm and a pointer element on said indicator extending withi'n its window.
2. A book marking device comprising a strip of sheet material medially bent back over itself to forma pair of opposed elongated flat arms, spring means to urge said arms together, one
`arm having an elongated Window extending 1on gitudinally thereof over the major part of its length, said arm being provided with longitudinal recesses extending along its side edges, an indicator member having inturned ends engaging said recesses for slidable movement over said arm along the whole length of said elongated window, said indicator having a window registering with the elongated window of said arm,
and a pointer element on said indicator extending within its window.
