Application May 12, 1944, Serial No. 535,292
1 Claim. 1
This invention aims to provide a shiftable indexing device for use on book pages, cards and the like, the article being so constructed that it will have an adequate hold and, at the same time, be capable of being shifted from one position to another, the device including means whereby the page, card or the like will be kept clean, against soiling by the fingers of an operator using the article.
Another object of the invention is to supply an index wherein the tab portion thereof will be protected against undue flexure and consequent breaking.
Within the scope of what is claimed, the structure described and shown may be changed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 shows in elevation, a device constructed in accordance with the. invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the strip unfolded;
Fig. 4 is an edge elevation illustrating the operation.
The drawing shows an indexing device the body of which includes a, U-shaped piece I of flexible, transparent material, such as Celluloid, the piece comprising oppositely-disposed wings 2 and 3, and a bend 4 connecting the wings. The wings 2 and 3 have oppositely-disposed openings 5 spaced from the bend, and forming an upstanding, loop-shaped tab 6. The tab thus defines an opening therein whereby a grip of substantial size is provided, this grip being collapsible to a limited extent when grasped. Said grip thus adjusts itself to the fingers grasping it so that it can be more readily manipulated than otherwise.
A resilient, substantially U-shaped clip I is provided, and may be made of resilient material, such as metal, if desired. The clip 1 is flat, instead of circular in cross section, and acquires a good hold on the wings 2 and 3.
The clip 1 comprises opposed legs 8 and 9, and a convexed crown l0 connecting the legs and extended through the openings 5, the legs 8 and 9 bearing, respectively, on the outer surfaces of the Wings 2 and 3. The leg 9 is longer than the leg 8.
It is in order to facilitate the straddling of the device upon the edge of a card, book page or the like, indicated at II, that the wing 3 is made somewhat longer than the wing 2, the corresponding difference in the lengths of the legs 9 and 8 of the clip 'I facilitating such an operation.
Indicia l2 may be imprinted or marked in any other desired way, on the inner surfaces of the opposed walls of the tab 6, the indicia thus being protect-ed against attrition and obliteration.
The legs 8 and 9 of the clip 1 comprise straight, diverging portions I4 which merge into the crown l0 and define a space [5 in which the body 1 of the index may flex laterally, against either of the straight, diverging portions, thereby avoiding a flexing of the tab 6 and a breaking thereof at the places where the tab is weakened by the openings 5.
The openings 5 and the clip 1 may be duplicated to any desired extent, a detail in which there is neither patentable novelty nor ground for added illustration.
The strip I prevents the page or card II from being soiled by the hand of a user.
What is claimed is:
In an index, a resilient body of transparent material comprising opposed wings and a bend connecting the wings, the bend and portions of the wings defining an upstanding, loop-shaped collapsible tab provided with indicia on the inner surfaces of the wings adjacent to the bend and exposed through but protected by the material of the body, said tab having oppositely-disposed openings which are spaced from the bend; and a substantially U-shaped spring clip comprising oppositely-disposed legs which bear on the outer surfaces of the respective wings, and a crown extended through the openings; the legs comprising straight portions which diverge toward the openings and merge into the crown, said portions defining an open space in which the body may flex laterally, against either of the straight, diverging portions, thereby avoiding a flexing of the tab and a breaking thereof at the places where the tab is weakened by the openings, the thickness of the body being appreciably less than the width of said space.
