U ITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
' LORENTZ BERG, on MINNEAPOLIS, MINNEsoTA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOKVAND MUSIC SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,260, dated December 21, 1875; application filed J une 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENTZ BERG, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Book and Music Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theart to which it pertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the book-holding frame. Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates tothat class of booksupports or music-holders where the bookholding frame may be adjusted so as to conform to. the size of the book or sheet of music; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter set forth. i
A is an upright standard, provided with one or more longitudinal slots, b. In the slot or slots .is inserted the sliding standard 0, which has a series of perforations, c c c. Pivoted to the top of the standard 0 isthe laterally-projecting revolving arm D, which carries the adjustable frame. This consists of four strips of wood or metal 0, e, e, and 6', each having two longitudinal slots, f. One of the strips, 6, is firmly secured at right angles to the arm D the other, 6, parallel to this, has a sliding box, (shown atgin Fig. 2.) The strips 6 and e are adjusted at right angles toeand c by means of loose sliding nuts H, which slide in the slots f. iThe four strips thus form a parallelogram, the size of which may be regulated at will to conform to the size of the book or sheet of music. The strips 6 and c are each provided with a clamp, I, adjustable by a set-screw, K, so as to firmly clamp the covers of the book-one on each side. Each of them has also a small upright, L, carrying a bracket, M, and perforated at N.
To the brackets M are secured coiled springs O, terminating in loops or eyes 0. In the perforations N and eyes 0 are inserted the adjustable thumb-levers m, to the inner ends of which are affixed cross-wires m, which form the leaf-holders, that will press down upon and hold the leaves inserted under them by the tension of the springs O. The strips 0 and c are each perforated at n, and in the perforation is inserted the hook 10, so as to clasp the back part of the binding of the book inserted in the frame, and thus hold it secure ly in its proper position. The arm D is pivoted to the standard O in such a manner that it can be made to revolve in its bearings. It is provided with a ratchet-wheel, R, that engages With a spring-pawl, S, so that it may be adjusted to any desired angle. The elevation of the book-carrying frame may be regulated by the bent spring-lever T, which is pivoted to the standard A, as shown. The bent part a of the lever T, engaging with the perforations 0 in the sliding standard 0, holds this firmly at any height to which it is adjusted.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a book or music holder, device consisting of the upright L, having the perforation N, bracket M, and spring 0 7 the latter arranged so as to operate the clasp or thumblever m, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbet'oreset forth.
2. A book or music support consisting of the upright A, sliding standard 0, revolving horizontal arm I). book-holding frame 6, e, e, and c, hooksp, clamps I, thumb-levers m, and
leaf-holders m, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LORENTZ BERG.
