Description

(No Model.)
J. F. OB RIEN. v TELEPHONE ADDRESS INDEX-AND ADVERTISING DEVICE No. 413,371. Patented Oct. 22, 1889.
1 WI: BLTMW mm!!!) N UNITED v STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JOHN FRANCIS OBRIEN, OF QUEBEC, QUEBEC, CANADA.
TELEPHONE-ADDRESS INDEX AND ADVERTISING DEVIC'E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,371, dated October 22, 1889.
Application filed October 31, 1888. derial No.289,602r (No model.) Patented in Canada October 10,
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS OBRIEN, of the city and Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telephone- Addres's Indexes and Advertising Devices, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in the Dominion of Canada, numbered 29,968, dated October 10, 1888;) and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my addressindex and advertising medium. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same as when in use, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig. 2.
My invention has for its objectto enable telephone-subscribers to quickly ascertain the call-address of other subscribers by an index convenient for reference and to allow of display of advertisements on. the pages of said index without impairing the ready reference to call addresses.
My invention consists of a board adapted to be hung near a telephone, an index-book attached to said board and opening briefwise, and springs secured to the verticaledges of the board to hold up the leaves of the index when raised for reference. The leaves of the index are preferably attached to a stubback, which is secured to the board. horizontally,
so that a leaf may be conveniently removed and replaced. The front pages contain the names of subscribers and their callnumbers andthe backs of the pages sold to advertisers for displaying their announcements.
A represents a piece of board of any suitble wood or material, shaped to be pleasing to the eye and provided with a screw-ring B or a hole to hang the same to a fixture at a place convenient to the sight when using the telephone. To the outer face of the said board is secured an index book 0. The leaves F are alphabetically lettered at the bottom and preferably attached at top to a stubback D, removably secured horizontally to about the middle of the board, whereby the book will open briefwise and the leaves be severably attachable, to allow a leaf containing obsolete matter to be replaced by another having the desired announcement without removing the other leaves. Ordinary brass paper-fasteners a will be found convenient for this purpose. Above the index-book is secured to the board at each of its opposite edges a spring F. These springs are so formed that when a leaf or a number of leaves of the book are raised against the top part of the board the springs will yield and, reacting, re: tain said leaves until released. subscribers to a telephone. system are inscribed on the front page of the leaves, or that side which is exposed to view when at the drop position, and on the back of said leaves are displayed advertisements or other announcements, which will be observable when referring to the subscribers names or subjectmatter of the index.
By my invention the inconvenience of the unhandy reference books now supplied to telephone-subscribers is obviated, the liability of the book being lost or mislaid is removed, and the difficulty now often experienced in finding a' reference will be overcome and delay and vexation avoided.
I claim as my invention;-
1. A list for telephone-service or like purpose, composed of separately-indexed leaves removably secured to a support and having a spring-holder to receive and hold said leaves when opened for reference, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the board A, the alphabetical index-book O, secured thereto briefwise, and the springs E, to hold up the leaves of said index when making a reference, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the board A, hav
ing. springs E, of the index-book O, secured briefwise thereto, said book having a stubback D and leaves F, alphabetically arranged and attached removably to said back, substantially as set forth.
JOHN FRANCIS OBRIEN.
