GEORGE E. PERKINS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO BUR- I LOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF THE SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 65,596, dated June 11, 18 67.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTfBOSOMS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that 1,-GEORGE B. PERKINS, of'B-ridgeport, in the county of Fairlield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Fronts; and]: do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in r Figure 1, a vie\ v of the front with the body of theshirt as folded.
Figure 2, a section on line ar a: enlarged.
This invention relates \to the peculiar form and construction of the bosom, and in such peculiar form and construction the invention consists. And to enable others to construct my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is the body of the shirt, denoted in blue, fig. 2, and extends in and meets at the centre, as denoted in fig. 2. The bosom is cut commencing narrow at the neck, increasing in width over the breast, narrowing toward the waist, as seen in fig. 1. The object of this peculiar form is to allow the bosom to conform easily to the body, and without that liability to hitch up" and wrinkle by'the movement of the body, as does the common square bosom. The bosom is constructed, each side from a single broad plait or a double thickness, 13, of material laid flat or plain, and having a cord, (1, upon the edge, and at a little distance from the edge other cords, b, as seen in fig. 2, the object of these cords being to give firmness and elasticity to the broad plilit B, and-the bosom thus formed and constructed is stitched to the body of the shirt upon the line a, so as to lie up independent of the body A. This arrangement, when theshirt is upon the person, leaves an open space between the plait and the body of the shirt, so that the perspiration from the person, if absorbed by the body of the shirt under the bosom, will pass off or evaporate from the space without moistening or soiling the bosom. This construction is intended more particularly for summer wear or travelling shirt.
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
A bosom attached to the shirt over the bosom proper thereof, expanding in width from its attachment to the collar band, and narrowing in its approach to the waist, as shown, and strengthened longitudinally by cording, all substantially as described.
GEO. B. PERKINS.
