IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 159,554, dated February 9, 1875; application filed December s, 1814.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARLYLE E. SUTPHEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a Reversible- Bosom Dress-Shirt', of Which the following is a speciieation:
My invention consists in the construction of a reversible bosom for dress-shirts, made separate from the shirt, and finished ou both sides, either of which .is a perfect bosom and ready for use, and in the construction of the shirtfront with Welts orstrips to receive and hold the bosom in position.
The bosom E is made up separate from the shirt, similar to other shirt besoins, except that it is made double, and finished on both sides, so that when one side is soiled it may be readily reversed and the other side used.
The bosom is fitted to a place prepared for it in the shirt-front. The front of the shirt is made With a plain close piece of muslin across the place for the bosom, and on either side of the bosom is stitched a narrow welt or strip, B, a half-inch Wide, more or less; and this strip, when it reaches the range of the neckt band C, forms an angle, D, Which passes to the neck-band.
The bosom is attached to the shirt by the button E on the band, and then from this eenter extends out, and passes under the Welts at the sides and top, and is held in place thereby.
Buttons f may or may not be used, as they are not essential.
When desirable to reverse the bosom, it is unbuttoned at the top, and the other side turned out, and again it ts in the same position.
The bosom may be made Wi-ththe edges divided, 'so that in putting it in a shirt, one part may go under the Welt, and the other above or outside of it, or both may be under the Welt. The Welt holds it in position, in one form the same as in the other.
I do not claim a bosom made separate from a shirt, which has often been done 5 but I claim- The dress-shirt constructed with the Welts or strips B D, varranged to confine and hold in place a separate and removable bosom, substantially as and for the purposes speciiied.
