BOSOM-SHIRT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,520, dated March 10, 1885.

Application filed May 27, 1884.

To ail whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. PINE, of

the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Bosom-Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to bosom-shirts and the attachment of the bosom to the shirt by means of a bias-cut border-piece that is folded centrally and longitudinally and laid with its out edges parallel to the edges of the bosom, sewed thereto, turned over and down on the line .of union, with the outer edge of the folded border-piece attached to the shirt at the front, and a like border-piece attached to the bosom-lining or body side facing in the same manneras that attached to the bosom proper, and said lining border-piece on its folded edge sewed to the inner surface of the shirt opposite to the bosom at the front and to and through the exteriorly-connected edge of the border-piece of the bosom proper, the object and purpose of my invention being to unite a rounded bosom in a shirt-front without gathers in the piece by which it is connected to the shirt,-or gatlr ers in the latter.

Accompanying this specification, to form a,

part of it, there are three plates of drawings containing five figures illustrating my invention, with the same designation of its parts by letter-reference used in all of them.

Of these illustrations,Figure 1 shows the po' sition of the parts after a biascut border-strip was folded longitudinally and centrally, laid with its out edges coincident to those of the bosom-lining and sewed thereto, then turned over and down on the line of its union, with the fold edge of said border-sewed to the inside surface of the shirt-front, and inside the line of which union of border and shirt-body the latter was subsequently cutout to produce the bosom-opening. Fig. 2 shows a section taken on the line a? w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows the previously-connected bosom, bosom-ply, and border-piece as sewed to the edge of the boson1- opening and to and through the border-piece of thelining on the inner body side of the shirt, the parts at the neck-opening and on one side thereof being shown as detached and turned over and down to better indicate their relative position. Fig. 4 shows ashirt-front with the attachment of the bosom completed. Fig.

The several parts of the attachmenoconstituting my invention are designated by letterreference, and the process steps by which the parts are connected are described as follows:

The letter A indicates the shirt-front, which may be made with or without a re-enforce. When used with the latter, it and the shirt are together connected to the other parts, as the shirtfront would be if used alone.

The letter B designates the bosom; P, the bosom-ply; F, the body side facing or lining of the bosom; O, the border of the bosom proper, and O the border of the lining F.

The letter d indicates the outer surface of the shirt-front, and (1 its body side surface.

The parts thus designated are attached as follows: Both the border-pieces O and O are cut on a bias line of the fabric, and they are each folded centrally and longitudinally. The border-piece O is laid with its out edges parallel with that of the bosom-lining, sewed as thus placed, turned over and down, so as to bring its central fold to the outer edge, the stitching connecting the border and lining being designated at c. The border-piece 0 is attached at c to the edges of the bosom proper and bosom-ply in the same manner as the border 0 is attached to the bosom-lining. After the borders have thus separately been attached the bosom-lining and connected border on the outer folded edge of the latter, as indicated at s, are attached to the body side of the shirtfront opposite to where the bosom comes at the front, and when this union has been made the shirt-body, where inside of this union with the said border, may be cut out to form the bosom-opening G, with the parts appearing as at Fig. 1. After the bosom-opening has been thus cut out, then the outer edge of the border-piece on the bosom proper is sewed at a to and through the exterior of the shirtfront at the edge of the bosom-opening, (when said opening is made,) or to and through the outer edge of the border-piece on the bosomlining previously connected to the body side of the shirt-front, with the parts appearing as illustrated at Figs. 3, 4, and 5.

While I have shown and described the. bosom-lining, by means of its border-piece, as

attached to the inner surface of the shirt-front before the bosom-opening is cut out, if desired, the bosom, by means of its border-piece, may be attached to the shirt before the opening is cut out, and the lining subsequently attached; or, if desired, the shirt-front, where included by the bosom proper and lining, may remain intact to form a thickness of the ply. In eitherinstance the combined attachment of the bosom proper and bosom-lining by means of a bias cut and folded border-piece would be the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. In combination with the shirt and the attached bosom thereof, the folded border-strip 0, attached to the inner side of the shirt, and the folded border strip 0, attached to the outer side of the shirt and to the inner side of the bosom, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the shirt, the shirtbosom, and the inside lining, F, the folded GEORGE W. PINE.
