Description
P. B. PIGK'ENS- Shir-t.
No. 204,081. Patented May 21,1878.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PULASKI B. PIOKENS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y,
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,081, dated May 21, 1878; application filed A April 25, 1878.
. 3 is a face view of the collar detached.-
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. My invention consists in a shirt the neckband of which is provided with two collarbuttons or like fastening devices, which are respectively located at equal distances from its center, so that when a collar is attached to this shirt by means of such buttons a space is left between the two ends of the collar, and hence I am enabled to make the latter without the usual button-hole tabs or projections for the purpose of attaining this object; also, in the combination, with a shirt made as above stated, of a collar the band of which is of equal length to its flap, and which is provided with suitable devices to engage with the fastening devices of the shirt-band, so that this collar can be readily attached to the shirt, and has a space between its ends, while, inasmuch as the same is devoid of button-hole tabs or projections, it can be manufactured at less cost than the collars now generally in use.
In the drawing, the letter A designates my shirt, and B is its band, having twocollarbuttons, 0 c, which are respectively located at equal distances from its center. ,In the example shown the buttons 0 c are inserted in suitable holes formedin the shirt-band B 5 but they can obviously also be sewed to the latter; or, if desired, other devices may be substitnted for the buttons. l
The letter D designates a collar such as I have combined with the shirt-band B. I make the band e of this collar of equal length to its flap f, and form near the opposite ends of the band 0 button-holes g g, of suitable size to re-.
ceive the buttons 0 c. When, however, other devices are used instead of the buttons 0 c of the shirt band, the button -holes g g are changed to correspond to the devices of such band.
It willbe perceived that when the collar D is attached to the shirt A by the buttons 0 c, the ends of the collar are brought at a distance from each other and a space is left between them. In collars as now generally made this space is produced by providing the article with button-hole tabs or projections at its opposite ends. The peculiar arrangement of the buttons 0 0 enables me to dispense with these tabs or projections, as shown, and in consequence thereof my collar can be manufactured at low cost.
The arrangement of the buttons 0 0 also, in great ,measure, prevents the collar from a shifting or working up over the shirt-band between the front and back of the shirt.
I prefer to construct the shirt A with an open back and to make the collar D a standing collar; but in some cases a turn-down colla may be used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a shirt neck-band which is provided with two buttons or like fastening devices, respectively situated at equal distances from its center, of a collar the band of which is of equal length to its flap, and which is provided with suitable devices to engage with the fastening devices of the shirt-band, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
