UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
LUGIUS DEMING AND JOHN W. DEMING, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD THEIR RIGHT TO COTTON H. ALLEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLANKS FOR HORSE-COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,578, dated December 25, 1877 application filed November 13, 1877.
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that we, LUCIUS DEMINGDQFG JOHN W. DEMING, residents of St. Louis, issouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blanks for Horse-Collars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan; and Fig. 2, a cross-section taken on the line :0 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters denote similar parts.
Our improvement relates more especially to blanks used in the manufacture of what are termed duck horse-collars, or collars having a textile fabric for a covering, and having a facing such as shown in our application for Letters Patent for an improvement in horsecollars, recently filed in the Patent Office.
In the improvement referred to the facing extends up and down upon the rim of the collar, and from the middle seam on the outside of the collar up onto the front of the rim.
Referring to the annexed drawing, A represents the piece used for covering the collar. It is of a suitable textile fabric, preferably duck, and is of the proper configuration. B B represent strips arranged upon the canvas A, as shown, and attached thereto by means of the seam b b that extends along that edge of the strips which, when the collar is made up, comes upon the front of the rim. The
strips are, preferably, of leather but, in this respect, we do not desire to be confined to any one material. Webbing or canvas may be used.
The piece A, having the strips B B attached, as described, is then sewed up in the usual way, the edge a of the canvas and the edges b b of the strips coming upon the outside of the collar and in the line of the middle seam. In this manner a facing can readily be attached to a horse-collar, and when in place made to serve an ornamental as well as useful purpose; for, in addition to strengthenin g the collar at the part where it is attached, the facing may be of such appearance and design as to greatly improve the appearance of the collar, especially when the collar is of the character above referred to.
The strips B B may, if desired, be one continuous strip.
We claim- A horse-collar blank consisting of the canvas portion A and strips B B, of leather or other'suitable material, secured to the portion iA, substantially as and for the purpose set orth.
