JOSEPH H. HARRISON AND JAMES H. MARLEY, QF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,640, dated June 13, 1882.
Application filed May 8, 1882.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH H. HARRISON and JAMES H. MARLEY, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain newand usefullmprovements in Shirts; and we do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of our shirt, showing the bosom with a loose edge on one side and stitched to the shirt on the other, except where it overlaps the yoke; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the bosom and part of the shirt.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of shirts; and the novelty of our invention consists mainly in the manner, substantially as will be hereinafter shown and described, of allowing full width to the bosom at the neck of the shirt, and at the same time obviating the pressure from the yokeupon the bosom; also, in a novel manner of producing what is termed a flexible shoulder, in combination with a bosom having full width and extending at the neckband over the yokes, as we shall now proceed to describe.
The letterAdesignates the bodyof the shirt, B B the sleeves thereof, and C the bosom. D D are what are denominated the yokes, and E is the neckband.
The shirt shown in the drawings is of the kind which is open at the back, and closed in front by the bosom O, which may have loose (x0 model.)
edges to; or these edges may be confined to the body part of the shirt by stitching.
It will be seen that the upper edge of the bosom O is stitched to the neckband E, and that the bosom extends over the yokes D D at the base of the neck.
By thus constructing a shirt we give full width to the bosom at the neckband, and at the same time obviate the pressure from the yoke upon the bosom, which, with shirts differently constructed from ours, causes the bosom to wrinkle and break at the base of the neck. We also produce a flexible shoulder. for the reason that the. yoke is independent of the bosom, and we afford an ease in fit about the neck and yoke of a shirt not obtained in any shirt where the bosom is attached to the yoke.
Having described our invention, we claim 1. A shirt having the bosom connected to the neckband and extended over and above the yokes, substantially in the manner and for the purposes described.
2. The loose-edge bosom, the neckband havin g the bosom attached to it, and the yokes extended beneath the upper extended flaps or loose edges of the bosom, all in combination, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we at'tix our signatures in presence of two-witnesses.

HORACE HARRIS, R. S. STEADMAN.
