To all whom,- it may concern:

Be it known that I, DEARCY A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Collars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to horse collars and has for its object to provide a collar wherein the upper part of the body is seamless, to

obviate chafing of the shoulders of the animal upon which it is worn.

In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of a horse collar constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a cross section of one side of the collar, on the line IIII, Fig. I. Fig. III is a similar view on the line IIIIII, Fig. I. Fig. IV is a detail view of the piece for forming the inside of the body and the seamless upper part thereof. Fig. V- is a view of the piece for forming the out-side of the base of the body. Fig. VI is a view of the piece for forming the throat piece.

Referring more in detail to the parts :1 designates the body, 2 the rim, 3 the hame socket, 4 the throat piece, 5 the pad, and 6 the neck strap of my improved collar, which, except for the upper portion of the body, is similar in construction and appearance to those in ordinary use.

Ordinarily the completed body is formed throughout its length from two pieces of leather which are sewed together at their outer edges, and are sewed to the front rim within the hame socket; such seams corresponding to my socket seam 7 and rim seams 8, except that in the present collar the seams 8 extend only part way up on the body. In using a collar having a full seam 8, the upper part of the seam often rubs against the shoulder or the neck of the animal, producing a chafe or sore, especially when the collar has become somewhat worn or misshapen, or if the animal is sweenyed.

In the construction of the present collar, I preferably form each side of the body of two pieces of leather, one of which, preferably that for forming the inner face of the body, has a lateral extension of sufficient width to form the entire upper part of the roll 9, the other piece being shorter than the first named, so as to extend only partially throughout the height ofthe body.

In manufacturing the collar, the outer edges of the base parts 10 and 11 of the body are sewed together, the upper edge of the piece 11 being extended beneath the extension 12 of the piece 10, and secured thereto by a rivet 13. The outer edge of the piece 11 and extension 12 are then brought over the inner edge of the piece 10, the edges of the outer rim 2 lapped thereover, and the parts sewed together in the usual manner. When the body is stufied, the seam 8 will project laterally, so as to avoid contact with the animal upon which it is worn, and the upper end of the body will be seamless, so that it will have no sharp or rough edge to contact or rub the animal, either while the collar is new or after it has become set from use.

It is apparent that the construction described is as durable as a full seam collar and that a smooth bearing surface is provided irrespective of the shape which the collar may assume, or the outline of the animals neck and shoulders.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. A horse collar comprising rim and body members, said body member having a face seamed at the bottom and seamless at the top, the outside portion of the seamless top being lapped over the outer face of the base.

2. A horse collar comprising rim and body members, said body member having a face seamed at the bottom and seamless at the top, the outside portion of the seamless top being lapped over the outer face of the base and secured thereto.

3. In a horse collar, a rim, and a body having outer strips extending only partially throughout the length of the body, and inner strips extending throughout the length of the body, the inner and outer strips being secured to the rim and to each other, and the upper portions of said inner strips being rolled above the outer strips and secured to said rim at their inner and outer edges.

4. In a horse collar, a rim, and a body having an outer base strip shorter than the body, and an inner strip having a base portion stitched to said outer strip, said inner strip having an extension in its upper part for completing the body above the outer strip.

5. In a horse collar, a rim, and a body having an inner strip provided With :1 lateral extension at its upper part, an outer strip stitched to the inner strip below the extension and having its upper end lapped under said extension, the outer edges of said outer strip and said extension being stitched to said inner strip to form a 00111- pleted body, having a seamless upper part, substantially as described.
