UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
NELLIE M.- LENNON, OF'BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
COMBINED CORSET-RETAINER AND STOCKING-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,064, dated June 21, 1898. Application filed January '7, 1898. Serial No. 66 51897. (No model.)
Connecticut, have invented certain new and,
useful Improvements in a Combined Corset- Retainer and Stocking-Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide a'device for ladies wear which will retain a corset in place and prevent it from slipping up under any circumstances, thereby holding in the abdomen, and which will also serve as a stocking-supporter, providing a double hold on each stocking, so that should both Clasps slip the stocking will still be held and prevented from slipping down the leg.
It is of course well understood that with most ladies, especially those inclined to stoutness, there is a tendency for the corset to slip up and for the abdomen to project. These tendencies are wholly overcome by my novel device, which holds the corset down to its proper position perfectly, and thereby retains the abdomen in place and greatly improves the figure.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front View, and Fig. 2 a side View, illustrating the operation of my novel corset-retainer and stocking-supporter.
A denotes acorset, B stockings, and O my novel retainer and supporter as a whole. This retainer and supporter comprises retaining-straps 1, ordinarily elastic, each strap being preferably made in two parts and joined together by a buckle 2, so as to make the device adjustable and which in use pass down the front of the leg and centrally over the knee; leg-bands 3, which encircle the leg just below the knee and act to hold the corset down, as clearly shown in the drawings, and also to hold the retaining-straps in position centrally-over the knee-caps; side straps 4, which are attached to the retaining-straps and are provided at their lower ends with Clasps 5 for engaging the stockings; a connecting-strap 6, by which the two retainingstraps are held together near their upper ends, and catches 7 atthe upper ends of the retaining-straps, by which the device is attached to the corset. It will of course be understood that the special .form of clasps or catches used is not of the essence of my invention. In the drawings I have indicated ordinary stud-and-loop clasps, and the catches are simply hooks, made of sheet metal, which engage rings or loops 8 on the corset. be obvious that the single adjustment of each retaining strap, which is effected by the buckle 2, is all the adjustment the device requires. The leg-bands are not intended in practice to encircle the legs closely and do not interfere to the slightest extent withthe blood circulation, as is the case with ordinary leg-garters, although I find in practice that these leg-bands are drawn up under the knee cap and actually serve to prevent the stocking from slipping down the leg should the Clasps slip, which is an accident quite possible with ordinary Clasps.
Having thus, described my invention, I claim- 1. A combined corset-retainer and stocking-supporter comprising retainingstraps provided at their upper ends with catches for engagement with a corset and at their lower ends with bands which encircle the legbelow the knee, and side straps provided with Clasps for engaging a stocking on opposite sides of the retaining-straps.
2. A device of the character described comprising retaining-straps adapted to pass centrally over the knee-caps and provided at their upper ends with catches for engagement with a corset and at their lower ends with legbands whereby the retaining-straps are held in place and the corset is held down, a connecting-strap between the retaining-straps, and side straps connected to each retainingstrap and adapted to engage astocking.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
