Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HIBBERT, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
KNITTING-NEEDLE.
Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 6,025, dated January 9, 1849.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, J AMES HIBBERT, of Providence, in the county of Providence .and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new .and Improved Knitting-Needle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichy Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, exhibit side views of my needle drawn to a scale of the full size, as it appears in the different stages of the formation of the stitch.
Myinvention consists in the application of a latch or tongue E Fig. 1 in connection with the hook of the needle. Sweeping freely back and forth upon the center pin B Fi l I co-nstruct my needle in the general form shown in the drawings, of steel or other suitable material, and of different sizes according to the fineness of the work, the end at A Fig. 1 to be mounted with composition as heretofore applied.
The latch E Fig. 1 is constructed in the general form shown in the drawings of steel or other suitable material, and attached to the needle by a rivet or center pin B on which it freely turns or sweeps back and forth; a longitudinal groove is cut in the edge of the needle from the point B toward A and C Fig. 1 into which the latch falls in either position. The needle thus constructed is designed to work on the knitting frames heretofore in use.
In the operation of my needle the latch sweeps from D to C and from C to D Figs.
1 to 4 in the formation of each stitch by the frame, the force of the yarn thus moving it, each turn throwing a loop olf at the end of the needle at C, which completes the stitch with the loop last formed, hanging upon the hook of the needle. For a further illustration of the operation of my needle and of the action of the latch in forming a stitch see Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, which plainly show the position of the latch during the different st-ages of the formation of the stitch.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The applicatlon of a latch or tongue applied to the hook of the needle and qperated K as herein described. March 28, 1848.
