Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. S. BALLOU, JR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT.
Specification. of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. S. BALLoU, J r., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a back view of a shirt made according to my invention. Fig. 2, is a detached view of a yoke made in the old style. Fig. 3, is a back View of a shirt made according to my invention and applied to the wearer.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to a novel form of that portion of the shirt which is technically termed the yoke,7 and which will be hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the shirt is made to t the wearer far better than those made in the ordinary or in any way that has passed under my observation, and the shirt also allowed to conform to the motion and position of the body far better than usual. y
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. i
I cut my improved yoke by having` the upper parts or ends a, that run from the neck band a, to the ends of the shoulders b, made quite sloping and having the back of the yoke of scalloped form so as to leave two pointed projections c, c, which project down on the shoulder blade at equal distances from the center of .the back as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. In Fig. l, the form or outline of the shirt is shown in red, and the im- 25,937, dated November 1, 1859*.
proved yoke is shown in black with its front ends a, not attached but turned up in order to show the whole form and the exact position it occupies.
Between the projections c, c, the recess d, extends upward nearly to the neck band a', and the back of the shirt is gathered in said recess,.and the shirt allowed to yield or give and conform perfectly to the movements of the body, the yoke at the same time acts as a shoulder brace to the shirt and causes it to fit on the breast equally as well as on the back, and the shirt is kept in a smooth state not liable to wrinkle as the yoke has a certain spring or elasticity connected with it.
By referring to Fig. 2, in which the old yoke is shown, it will be seen that a rigid band a", extends entirely across the back and there is no elasticity, the shirt is not permitted to conform to the body and hence the bosom soon becomes wrinkled and soiled.
The top of the improved yoke is cut to receive the necky band a, and the yoke is stitched to the shirt as usual.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article of manufacture is- 'A shirt formed by having its yoke made of two pointed projections c, c, extending downY from the shoulders or inclined front ends a, of the yoke on the shoulder Vblades of the wearer, in such a manner as to leave a recess el, between the projections, which recess extends upward nearly to the neck band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
