Description

M. HNKE'LSTEIN'. COLLAR AND STIFFENER THEREFOR -APPL]CATION FILED SEPT. .25. 1916.

Specification of Letters Patent. integrated daily ll i. "to
Application filed. September 25, 1916. Serial No. 121,983.
To all whom it may concern; Be it known that I, Marcos FINKELSTEII I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar and Stiifener- Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to soft shirt collars and its object is to rovide a new and improved collar and sti. ener therefor arranged to stiffen the neckband with a view to maintain. the shape of the turndown portion and to prevent it from wrinkling and to hold the neckband more or less out of contact with. the neck of the wearer to prevent perspiration from wilting the collar especially the turndown portion thereof. Another objectis to permit of conveniently removing the stiiiener from a worn or a soiled collar and applying it to a fresh collar while the worn or soiled collar undergoes the usual washing and laundrying. A' further object is to make the tnrndown portion detachable from the neckband to permit the soiled turndown portion of the collar to be detached from the neck band for independent washing and laundrying.
In order to accomplish the desired result the neckband off a collar is provided with a pocket or recess for removahly holding a flexible stiffener or shaper.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, 111 which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in-all the views.
Figure l is a plan View of'a soft turndown collar with the parts in extended posit-ion;
2. is a cross section of the soft turndown collar on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1', the iiap being turned down;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stfllener or shapcr.
The soft shirt collar in its general con-- struction consists of a neckband ljO, a turn down portion 11 and a stiffener orshaper 12 removahly held in a pocket 13 formed in the neckhand 10. The turndown portion 11 of the collar is detachably connected to the neckband 10 by fasteners lasuch aspress buttons of the stud and socket type, as shown. By making the turndown. portion 11 detachable from the neckband 10 the turn down portion when soiled can be readily re moved from the neclrhand and replaced by a fresh one.
The neckhand 10 is made of several layers or plies and the outermost layer is spaced from the next following one so as to provide the pocket 13 for the reception oi the stifiener or shaper 12. This pocket 13 is closed at the top, bottom and at one end by stitches which connect the plies with each other, but is open at the other mit of conveniently insertin the stiiiener in'the pocket 13 or removing it therefrom. y The stiffener or shaper 12 is preferably in the form of a skeleton frame made of celluloid, sheet metal or other suitable material capable of flexing to conform to the shape of the neckband when the collar is used on the shirt. The stiffener or shaper 12 conforms approximately to the shape of the neckband, that is, its upper margin extends close to the upper margin of the neckband while the ends are converging downwardly and inwardly. By reference to the drawings, it will be noticed that. the pocket or recess 13 terminatesat the inner ends of the usual 'buttonhole flaps 20 and 21 of the neckband so that the collar can be readily fastened in position on the neckband of the shirt.
It will be noticed that the neckband 10 is kept sti.fii,the turndown portion 11 hangs down properly from the stiffened neckband and is hence not liable to wrinkle and as a consequence keeps its shape as long as the Q collar is used. By making the stiffener or shaper"12 of a thin, light flexible material it does not exert any pressure on the neck of the wearer and it does not materially detract from the flexibility of the neckband itself.
It will further be noticed ing the neckband the latter is held more or less out of contact with the neck of the wearer, and even if the neckband becomes saturated with perspiration the latter is not liable to penetrate to the turndown portion 11, and hence the latter maintains its shape and appearance. By making the turndown end 16 to perthat by stifi'enportion 11 detachable from the neckband 1U the user is enabled to change the turndown portion lltwice or even more times a day without even. removing the neckband from its position on the shirt.
Itwill further be noticed that the detain able turndown portion 11 may be madeorf a diiferent' material than the neckband and also its shape can be varied to suit the tasteof the wearer Without requiring any change in the .neckband itself.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A soft turndown collar having a neck- .band provided with a pocket, a turndown 10 portion detachabiy connected with the said neckband', and a stiffener held removabiy Within the pocket of the neckband.
2. A soft turndown collar havin a neck MARCUS FINKELSTEIN.
