ATTO R N EY Patented Aug. 5, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE SUPPRTER IN UNDERGARMENTS Samuel Wald, New Ycrk, N. Y.
Application October 2i), 1939, Serial No. 360,338 1 Claim. Cl. 12S-159) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a supporter in mens and womens undergarments.
More specifically, the invention proposes the provision of a substantially crescent shaped hollow pouch for location upon the crotch of undergarments to act as a supporter in this Vicinity. When used upon mens under-wear it is propesed to act as a supporter for the male organs. When used on womens under-wear it is intended to support absorbent pads or similar material for use during menstruation periods.
Still further the invention proposes a specific construction of the pouch in which it is designed to be of one piece with the garment material.
Still further the invention proposes a modied form in which the pouch is arranged so that it may be stitched in position upon the crotch portion of the undergarment. v
Still further the invention proposes another modied arrangement wherein cords or strings are utilized to removably hold the pouch in its position.
As another object of this invention it is proposed to provide a means for supporting the top of the pouch in an elevated position so as to satisfactorily hold it when in use.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 9 is a fragmentary sectional view similar to Fig. 8 but showing a garment vconstructed according to a still further modiedform of this invention.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a supporter similar to that shown in Fig. 9, but' illustrating Ya still further 'modied form of the invention."4
Fig. ll'is a vertical sectional View; taken ori the line II-iI of Fig. 10.v
The supporter, in accordance with'this invention, is shown applied to a pair of mens trunks I0. These trunks may be'ofl any designand construction'and are intended to generally illustrate a mans undergarxnent. A substantially crescent shaped hollow pouch II is located'upon the crotch portion llla of the under'garmentl. This pouch Il is perforated at II and is formed from a continuation of the material 'forming the crotch (see Fig. 3). At the upper edge the pouch II is formed with a plurality of darts I2" which are secured in iiXed positions by lines `of stitches I3. rIfhese darts assist in forming the pouch'. The pouch I I is formed from two half sections 'I Iab and IIb which are secured, togethe'rai',v their adjacent contacting edges by va line of stitches I6 or by cementing. A means is provided for supporting the top of the pouch in an elevated condition and this meansk includes a pair of straps I8 located at opposite sides of the pouch and secured at their bottom ends to the mate' rial of the top edge of the pouch or made integrally therewith. These straps are adapted to extend upwards and at their upper `ends` are provided with elements I3a adapted to be attached to portions of the trunks lil which are located above the crotch Illa. y
Specically, the elements I82v in the particular form of the invention illustrated on the drawing, are provided with button holes 2S. The trunks are shown formed with an open iront,`the edge portions of which may be secured .together by the buttons 2| along one of the sides, engageable with button holes 22 along the other ofthe sides.- Itis intendedto provide additional but?v tons 2l within the trunks adapted to be engaged through the button holes 20 of the upper ends of the straps I8 in a manner so that the straps I8 are supported and thus the pouch is held. Instead of buttons, snap fastener, or any other means may also be provided for detachably or permanently securing the elements I8 to the garment. In this particular form of the invention, the pouch is intended. as a support for the male organs.
In Figs. 4-6 inclusive, a modified form of the pouch has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form essentially in the fact that the pouch is made from material separate from the material of the trunks. Specifically, this form of the invention illustrates a pouch II formed from two sections of material I Ia and I I b which are secured together by a line of stitches I6. These sections are fashioned with darts I2 so as to form the pouch into crescent shape.
The upper edges of the pouch are reinforced with yrubber tubing material I4. This rubber material I4 is in the form of a tube disposed within a turned down edge portion of the pouch. A line of stitches I5 holds the turned down edge portion flXedly in position. At the bottom end, the pouch II is' formed with extensions or tabs 24. These tabs are adapted to be folded so that portions are upon other portions thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and then the folded tabs are secured to the material of the crotch by stitches 25. The` tabs 24 comprise continuations from the edge portions'of the sections IIb and IIa at the crotch area.
In' other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.
In ligs. 'l` and 8, another modified form of the invention has been disclosed, which distinguishes from the prior form-s in the fact that the supporter has been shown applied to ladies panties. In this form of the invention theladies panties 3l)A have a crotch portion 30a and a crescent shaped hollow pouch 3l is mounted upon and secured to the crotch portion. The pouch 3I is formed of cloth material. It is lined with a waterproof liningV 32 which is of separate material, preferably of rubber, oiled silk, or other Waterproof material, and is merely set into the pouch 3l. An absorbent pad 33 is set into the water proof lining 32. This pad 33 preferably is constructed of sponge'rubber. At the top it is provided with a small upwardly projecting central rib portion 33a intended to engage in the extremity of the body cavity to assist in its operation of absorbing liquids.
The pouch 3I at its bottom portion is provided with tab elements 3|b which comprise merely continuations from the edge portions of sections used-in making the pouch. 'Ihese tabs 3Ib are folded so that thereV are superimposed layers. Stitches 34 engage through the folded tabs 3Ib and the material ofthe crotch 3l)a to securely hold thepouch in position.
A `means is provided for supporting the top of the pouch in an elevated position to properly hold it against the body. This means includes a pair of straps 35 attached at their bottom ends to the front and rear portions of the pouch 3|. These straps are provided with fastening elements 36 Vat their upper ends adapted to be attached to the material of the panties 3U to hold the pouch in the supported position previously referred to;
In Fig. 9 another modied form is disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that a construction has been provided which permits the pouch to be removed. Specifically, the water proof lining 32 of the pouch has several strings 36 attached to the inner face of the bottom portion thereof. These strings pass up through openings 31 formed in the pad 33, and at their upper ends these strings 36 are formed with knots 36a.` These knots serve to hold the pad 33 in position within the lining 32 of the pouch.
Additional strings 38 are attached to the outer face of the water proof lining 32 of the pouch, in line with the strings 36. These strings 38 pass through openings 39 formed in the pouch 3|. The strings 38 have tips 46 so that they may readily be laced through openings 4I formed in the material of the crotch 30. When the strings 38 are laced through the openings 4I, they are then tied into a bow 38a which serves to releasably hold the pouch on the crotch.
When desired the strings 38 may be untied, and then the pouch may be removed. Tension from the strings 38 in their tied positions, are transmitted to the strings 36 which in turn securely hold the pad 33 in position. This pre vents accidental displacement of the parts.
In Figs. 10 and 11 the pouch 3l is illustrated with strings 38 for fastening the pouch to the crotch as shown in Fig. 9. The tab 24 projecting from one side of the pouch is provided for folding the same under the opening 3 I at the bottom of the pouch 3I. This tab prevents any dripping from the moist pad 33 While the garment is worn. Upon removal of the pouch 3l, the pad 33 may be washed within the pouch and by squeezing the pad the moisture may be removed through the mouth of the pouch and also through the bottom opening 3I'.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming Within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and ldesire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
In combination, an undergarment having a crotch with openings therethrough, a pouch formed of waterproof material, an absorbent pad, and means removably mounting said pad in said pouch and removably mounting said pouch in said crotch, comprising a pair of strings, means mounting one end of each of said strings on the inner surface of said pouch whereby the free end-s of said strings may be tied around said pad, a second pair of strings, and means mounting rone end of each of said second pair of strings on the outer surface of said pouch immediately opposite the first-mentioned means whereby lthe second pair of strings may be engaged through the openings in said crotch and tied, whereby to hold said crotch, said pad, and said pouch in substantially xed relationship.
