JOHN Bmoiritsn, or BROOKLYN, ooNNnUiIOU'r.
ooiasrnUcTroN or Wmvmns mms.
Speclcaon ot Letters atent No. 64, dated vClctoher 20, 183B.
To all whom it may concern: l
Beit known that I, Jomz Buurman, of Brooklyn, in the county of Windham and State of Connecticut, have invented a. new and useful Im rovement in the Construction of Weavers arnese, and the following is a full and exact description of the saine.
, The harne is made of such twine as is ordinarily used in making harnesses, the improvement is principally inwhat are called the e es of the harness or that part thi-ou h whi the warp of the web passes, and y which itjis movedup and down in sprining the web, and consists in making a who e shade or part with one continuous twine, and constructin a knot at the lower end of the eye, instea of ha the lower end of the eye a loop,.and instea of connecting the eye with the ower shaft by a loopg'oing thro h the eye as in the common harness. o specify, describe, and explain the improvement, and the manner of constructing the improved harness, it will be necessary to supose the maker of the harness seated at a ess bench, like the one in common usolet the harness shafts with binding be ut in the frame as usual, let the shaft n to the maker be called the first or lower. shaft (as it will be the lower shaft; when the liartwine of which the harness is to be con structed to be put onthe harness needle as usual. Begin to construct the harness at the left hand-after fastening the to the binding twine on the first shaft, passthe needle under the first shaft, and the rod, and the second shaft to the binding twine of the second shaft, fasten it there as in common the rod, let it lie directly above the twine al ready placed, tie the n er and lower twine to ether h some suits e knot on the side ofg the rocl7 nearest the second sh then bring the twine over the rod to the side of it next to the first, and connect the upper, and lower twine auin inlike manner, or with a, double knot, iis forming the eye, on the rod, with a. knot in each end of the then carry the twine across the of may e so called) by assin'g the needle un- 5 der the ma: shaft, mi
rod to the top of the second shaft (instead of carrying it under 'the rod as he ore fa on theL le -down at Athe iight hond o ness is finished, and in use) and the otlzuii shaft the second or upper shaft--let the harnesses then Vbring it under thisY shaft to' .harness in the `operation of spr' Erst gavil) fasten .the
the second as in the it beck to the 'rod and twine as before, brin form the eye, as in t ie first gavil, then con second shaft may he made thus; when the lit-under the second shaft to twine is bro described let it lap on lit a little, hold it to the rod with the thumb, and daen, let a loog from the twine on the needle hand of the twine alread placed, and between the rod, and second then pass the needle on the ht side of the twines placed as aforesaid on them, and u on the left hand oi them, and the oo aforesaid, then draw the hitch or knot c ose, and proceed to make the 'knot on the other end of the eye, thus,
the loose twine (i. e.) the twine ro immediately fromy the needle a little tothe left of the under twine whi extends h-om the rod to the iii-,st shaft pass the needle n i, .ma under said last mentioned twine, bring it iip between that, and the loose twine, and drawthe knot or hitch thus formed close to the rod, hold it therewith the thumb, and repeat the process v thus form' the double knot, or double hitch iii-I.
What claim as new, and my own innention inthe' construction .o'f the harness is-` Ths double knot or double hitch, or any other close knot which may answer the-puruse at the lower end of the eye, where loops ave heretofore beeniused; in the common the webthis, loop is liable to work, or slip in the eye, and thus fret out .the twineof the eye, orV loop before the rest of the harness is worn out.
The object of fas ends was to avoid this cul the above improvement is esigned. For convenienoy, and accuracy in makin? the harness the rod may be flnttened like a otter they eye at both and for this knife. The knots should be maderas aufV and uniformly as possible on the curateljr line of e e es. A
' To give an idea of the construction of the improved harness it has been deemed sufficient to explain the process of constructing it upon s colnmon haness-bennh, as it muy ybeen invented by the undersigned which he be mark-'upon such a bench, but to facilitate has made the. subject of a lstinct. applica,- the process so that 'the expensenf thehartion for a patent ness ma.y be materially diminished, and the JOHN BLALCIGIIAR. 5 improvement thereby rendez-d more bene- Witnesses: l
clal to the public. A. bench adapted-to the Tnoxs Bnolms,
peculiar construction of this harness' has Dimm. P. 'hmmm
