COMBINED CASE FOR PEN, PENCIL, KNIFE, TOOTHPICK, &C.

Specication of Letters PatentNo. 24,502, dated June 21, 1859.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN F. STURDY, of Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Combination of Knife, Pencil, Toothpick, and Pen Case, the same being a new and improved article of manufacture; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a longitudinal central section of my invention. Fig. 2, a transverse section of ditto, taken in the line m, w, Fig. l.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

This invention consists in combining within a case of peculiar construction a "knife, pencil, toothpick and pen as hereinafter fully shown and described, Vwhereby the several parts above named may be very compactly arranged, in a very durable manner and a case obtained equally as portable as an ordinary pencil-case.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents the case of the implement.l which is formed of two parts a, b, connected together by a swivel joint c. This joint is formed by having a fiange at the end of a tube d, in the part a, of the case fit within a plate secured to the inner end of the part Z2, of the tube, the inner end of the part a, abutting against b, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.

In the outer end of the part a, there is a reserve e, for leads, and within the tube cl, there is a spirally slotted tube f, which is permanently secured within tube d, and turns with it and the part a. Both these tubes are clearly shown-in Fig. 1.

Within the spirally slotted tube f, a rod g, is placed, and allowed to work freely up and down therein. This rod has a pin L, projecting horizontally from it, said pin' tting in the slot of tube f, as shown clearly in Fig. l. To the end of rod g, a knife blade z', is attached. The blade z', is fitted in the part 7), of the case and between two longitudinal plates y', therein which extend its whole length.

Both part-s a, b, of the case are fluted, that is to say, it is formed of a series of semitubes le, joined together in annular form to These semi-tubes 7c form recesses, in one ofwhich a pencil tube l, is placed, in another a toothpick m, and in the remaining two a pen slide a. The penciltube, tooth pick, and pen slide, are all shoved into and out from the case by means of slides 0, with which they are connected by rivets passing through slots p, in the case. The blade e', it will be seen is shoved into and out from the case by turning the part cr, of the case, the spirally slotted tube f, effecting this result in consequence of the pin la, fitting in the slot of the tube.

By having the case A, formed of a series of semi-tubes, arranged as shown, the case is rendered very sti and firm without being any larger than an ordinary pencil-case, and each device within the case may be used equally as well as if it were provided with a separate case. The great difficulty to be overcome in constructing an improvement of this kind, is the liability of the parts getting out of repair. So many parts being put in a single case render the latter quite weak, if constructed in the usual way. By my invention this difficulty is avoided, a very durable implement bein@ obtained.

I am aware that iiited pencil cases have been previously made as an ornament merely, and I am also aware that a spirally slotted tube has been previously used in pencil cases for operating pencil tubes and pen slides, and also that a knife blade, tooth pick, pencil tube, and pen slide have been used, combined in a single case, but I am not aware that said parts have ever been arranged and combined in the manner shown and in a case constructed so as to be perfectly durable and portable. I do not claim therefore any of the parts herein described when separately considered; but,

I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

The case A, constructed as shown and provided with the knife blade z', operated by the spirally slotted tube f, pencil tube Z, tooth pick m, and pen slide n, arranged and combined to form a new and improved article of manufacture.
