WATCH-CHAIN BAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,429, dated January 27, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN HOAGLAND, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in WVatch-Ohain Bars, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

My invention relates to that class of watchchain bars which contain a concealed pencil and tooth-pick case.

The invention consists in certain peculiar and novel details of construction and arrange ment, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved watch-chain bar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, showing the inclosed pencil-case in elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the pencil-case, showing its spirally-slotted sleeve in elevation. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the straight-slotted sleeve. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the pencil and tooth-pick holder.

In the said drawings, A designates the watch-chain bar, which is hollow and cylindrical in shape. The bar is provided with a ring, a, by which it is attached to the chain, and is closed at one end by the cap a.

B designates the cylindrical holder, which is provided on its side, midway of its length, with a pin, b, and carries at one end a pencil, B, and at the opposite end a toothpick, B.

O designates a tubular sleeve, which immediately surrounds the holder B. This sleeve is provided on its side with a straight slot, 0, terminating in oppositely disposed lateral cuts, the pin b projecting through said slot and entering said lateral cuts at the limits of its movements, so as to be held therein. One end of the sleeve is formed with a cylindrical enlargement, c, and at the opposite end with the plain portion 0 D designates a tubular sleeve, which immediately surrounds the sleeve 0, and is provided with the spiral groove d, through which the pin b projects.

The section E of the case is secured to the sleeve D by solder, while the section E is secured to the point 0 of the sleeve G by solder. The section E carries at its outer end the cap a which resembles the cap a in appearance.

The case is of such size as to fit snugly with in the bar, and when so fitted the bar has the appearance of an ordinary solid bar. The pencil and toothpick, being on a single holder, move together, and are both operated by a single spiral, thus differing radically from those cases in which a separate spiral groove is used for each implement. The pencil and tooth-pick necessarily move together, so that when one is extended the other is contracted, and vice versa. Of course other implements than a pencil and a tooth-pick may be usedas, for instance, a nut-picker, an ear-spoon, a finger-nail blade, &c., may be used. When either implement is extended, it is locked or held from contraction by the lateral cut in the slot 0, into which the pin 1) enters.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim-- 1. The combination, with a tubular watchchain bar closed at one end, of a case arranged to be inserted removably within said bar and containing a single holder for two implements constructed to move longitudinally within said case, as described.

2. The combination, with the bar A, having the cap a, of the removable case E E, having the cap a the sleeve'D, having the spiral slot d, the sleeve 0, having the slot 0, and the holder B, having the pin 12, all constructed and arranged as described.

3. The combination of the bar A, having the ring a and the cap a, the case E E, having the cap a the sleeve D, having the slot (1, the sleeve 0, having the slot 0, and the holder B, having the implements B B and provided with the pin 7), all as described.
