SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,122, dated July 1, 1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, W ILLIAM S. Hicks, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chain- Bar and Extension- Case, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to chain-bars for use with watch-chains; and the invention consists in a novel construction of an extension-case,

which forms a part of the bar, and in the combination of the extension-case with a tubular case, which constitutes the other part of the bar, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.

Various styles of toggles or chain-bars have been devised of late years, in which pencilcases and similar implements are carried; but as in most of them the pencil-case has been too small and short for convenient use, they have usually been more a matter of ornament than of utility so far as the pencil was 0011- ccrned.

The object of my present invention is to produce a chain-bar having an extension-case for a pencil, toothpick, or similar implement which can be extended to a length sufficient to enable it to be used conveniently, and which, when extended, can have its parts locked so as to hold them securely against-accidental movement in relation to each other, and which eXtension-case shall also form a part of the bar proper. To accomplish these results, I construct the device as follows:

I first provide a tube, A, closed at one end and open at the other, which is a little more than half the length that the bar is to be when complete, as shown at the left-hand part of Fig. 2. Around this tube A, flush with the open end, or nearly so, I fasten a band or ring, 0, carrying an eye', Z, for the insertion of a ring for attaching it to the watch-chain, or to which the chain may be connected direct,if pre ferred. This tube A thus constructed forms one-half of the complete chain-bar or toggle. I then construct an extension-case, B, as represented in 2, which is provided with the Fig. 2 is a side ordinary pencil-point, a, or whatever small implement may be preferred in lieu of the pencil -po1'nt. This extension case I construct as shown in Fig. 3, in which C represents the inner one of two tubes, to which the point a is secured in any suitable manner.

Over this tube C, I place another tube, D, of

the proper size to slide freely thereon, this outer tube, D, having a longitudinal slot, Z2, cut therein, as shown in Fig. 3. At its lower end this slot 1) is turned at a right angle, as shown, and a pin, 0, is secured to the inner tube, C, of proper size to slide freely in the slot, so that when the case is extended and the tubes so turned as to seat the pin c'in the transverse portion of the slot the two parts of the case B are locked, so they cannot be closed, thus holding the case extended to its full length and preventing it from being accidentally closed,

as they are liable to do when bearing 011 the point, if held by friction alone, as is usually the case. In order to make a finish to this case B, an outer tube or shell, I, is placed over the slotted tube D, as shown in Fig. 3, this outer tube or shell, I, having its outer end closed, and being made of the same size and material as the tube A, so that when put together they will correspond in external appearance and size. This extension-case B, when closed, is inserted into the tubular part of the bar A up to the end of the outer tube D and thus forms the other arm of the bar, the tube D being made to correspond in length with that part of A beyond the ring 0. VVhe-n thus put together, the bar has the appearance of plain solid bar, and it is a very neat as well as use ful device.
