Description

UNITED STATES 'PATENT UEETCE.
E. N. FOOTE, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATCH-CHAIN HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 28,842, dated June 26, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, E. N. Foo'rE, of No. 208 Broadway, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Vatch-Chain I-Iook; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows a side .external view of the hook in a closed state. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of ditto with the hook in an open state.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the three gures.
This invention is an improved hook for attaching a watch chain to the vest or any article of apparel while on the person, in such a secure manner that it will not be liable to casual detachment; it will form a safe and reliable hook that may be attached to the button hole of a vest, or to any other part of a vest or coat where there is no hole, its construction is very simple, and admits of any suitable ornamentation, and the expense of the improvement over the present hooks is trifling.
To these ends my invention consists in the employment of a jointed ring, or two ellip-` tical bows, having a pointed tenon at the point where the two ends come together that lits in a corresponding hole made in one end of the bows, in combination with a female screw socket that confines the jaws of the bows together, as will be hereinafter described and represented.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
This invention is an improvement on the present swivel-chain hook that is used for attaching the chain to a watch, and also an improvement on the ordinary button hole hook in the following particulars:
a, a, are the two seminelliptic jaws that form the main portion of the hook, the jaw a, has a long cylindrical shank b, formed on one end with a screw thread out around its surface, up to a shoulder c. This portion, (a) of the hook is suitably curved, and from its curved end projects a sharp point d, which may be made of steel so as to combine strength with smallness. The shank b, is partly divided longitudinally and has a lip or tenon c, projecting from its plane surface. The hook a has a semicylindrical shank b', with a shoulder c', and by cutting a slot in the shank, and rounding off the end of the shank slightly, thisfportion a, may be jointed securely to portion a, as clearly represented in Figs. 2 and 3. The curved end of this portion a', has a hole drilled into it for receiving the point d, and allowing the ends of the two hooks to go together, forming a continuous ring or elliptical eye.
g is a small tube or socket with a female screw cut into its end, into which fits the male screw portions of the Shanks of the hooks. The thimble or tube g, may be ornamented very handsomely, and a watch key or any handsome device formed on its end. To this tube is attached the ribband or chain eye 71 and the hook is complete. Now it will be seen that by introducing the lapel of the vest or any other portion of the vest or other article of apparel between the ends of the hooks, when the tube g, is unscrewed, as in Fig, 3, and then screwing the tube up tightly against the shoulders on the hooks as in Figs. 1 and 2, the hooks will be securely held together and attached to the fabric.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf The watch-hook, constructed as described '1nd represented.
