- 2 Claims. (Cl. 24-20515) This invention relates to a pivotally constructed slider for slide fasteners.
The'fprincipal object of the present invention is'th'e provision of a slider of the character described which is" comprised ofpivotally related "parts which may beseparated into open position or brought together to closed position as and when desired, irrespective of its location on the slide fastener'stringers. This feature is extremely ;important for :the purpose of freeing jammed sliders without recourse to special tools and special skills. Sliders which may be disassembled for this very purposehavev heretofore'been devised" and patented.- But in mostcases, it has been found necessary to completely disassemble the slider in order to accomplish-this purpose.
In-t-he present invention, however, all that need' jbedone is to swing the two pivotally connected in 'order to free the two-pivot ally connected elements for relative angular movement to open or' inoperativeposition.
ln-one-form-of th" invention, the locking sleeve comprises-f a tubular member having internal screw; threads which engage external screw threads on the pivotally connected elementsi- 'In'a'n'oth'er form'of this; invention; neither the sleeve nor the pivotally connected elements are provided with screwthreadsd; Instead, the sleeve is slotted to provide clearance for one of said pivotally connected elements when the slot and said pivotally connected element are in registration' with each other. When they are out of registration witheachother, the -two' plvotally corinected elements are locked in closed position." In neither of these two embodiments of this'invention is it necessary to completely remove the locking sleeve from the two pivotally associated elements and in neither case is it necessary to completely separate the two pivotally associated elements fromeach other;
Itisaccordingly a correlary' object of this invention to provide a'slider of the character described having-two pivotally connected elements "whichemay be moved into open or closed position ;relative. to. eachother and which 7 will always be I in proper alignment with each other. Thisfeature naturally flows from the fact that the pivotally connected elements need not be completely disassociated from each other at anytime. Similarly, the locking sleeve always remains connected to said pivotally associated elements, or at least one of them, irrespective of the positions of said pivotally associated elements relative to each other. 1
It is a further object to provide a slider of the character described, which is made ofbu t three simple main parts which may be easily assembled, and when so assembled are permanently united to prevent disassembly.

It will be understood that this flange is not: donned on the extension piece :until after the .extension pieces .30 and 36 and the sleeve .241have :been assembled. It will be understood from this arrangement, that screw threads 38 may, if desired, be omitted from extension piece 36 since the abutment of the looking member against shoulder 45 of upper member 22 will serve to position said upper member relative to the lower member 2|. Stated differently, as the construction of the two pivotally connected members is iillustratedzin the drawing, screw "threads 38 and'3'l in engagement with screw threads 42 serve to position the upper and 1 lower pivotally connected members relative to each, other. .Should screw threads 38 be dispensed with, it will be the abutment of the lock- .ingmem'bers against shoulder 45 that will serve to accurately align the upper and lower members of the slider.
Turning. now to the second form of this invention as shown in Figs. 5 to 9 inclusive, it willthere. beseen that slider 60, made .in accordance with said second .form .of the .inven- .tion, .has noscrewthreads at all. Its upper .iaw 6.! is provided with. an .extensionpiece ilwhich is pivotallyconnected to extension piece. 53 of lower jaw 54 .in the same manner as it was in the first .form .of the invention. Lockingmem- .ber .65 .is rotatably mounted on the .two extension piecesfiz and-B3. .It hasa cut-outfit; formed therein which. is registrable with extension .piece 82 of the upper jaw. When looking member .65 is turned from its looking position .of .Fig. fi-to its unlocking position of .Rig. Brent-out will .register with extension piece .62 and enablesaid extension piece, as well as jaw 51 with which it is integral, to ,pivot to open positionas shown .in Fig.8. It will-alsobeseen insaid Fig-9 that looking member ;B5-is -pr.ovided with an inwardly turned flange .13 which projects into .an annular groove 14 formed along .the line .of juncture between extension piece -63.;and jaw 64 with which it-is integral. Itis this flange singer-cove construction which. prevents longitudinal movement of the locking member relative to said; jaws.

A .slider for slide fasteners, comprising-h pair of top and bottom wallmem-bers, rearward extension pieces on. said wall members, the-bot- .tom wall member extension havinga transverse bearing .slot .in- .its free end, and :having axiom- .gitudinally disposed radial slot receptive of substantially the whole body of the bottom member extension, .2. pair of -trunnions .carried iby the extension piece of 2-the .top wall memberzand rotatably receivable in said \bearing slottocon- .stitutea pivotal connection between :saidwext'ension pieces, and a locking sleeve longitudinally movably embracing :said extension pieces;zsaid extension pieces being provided with aligned: ex-
. 75 .ternal screw threads andsaid locking sleevebe'ing provided with internal screw threads engageable therewith, a rotation of said locking sleeve in one direction on said screw-threaded extension pieces causing the locking sleeve to move forwardly of said pivotal connection to restrain the extension pieces against relative pivotal movement, and rotation 01 said locking member in the opposite direction causing said locking sleeve to move rearwardly of said pivotal connection and into unlocking position to enable said extension pieces to engage in relative pivotal movement. 5

A slider in accordance with claim 1, wherein the locking sleeve comprises a cylindrical member having a radially inwardly extending flange formed at its forward end, the internal screw threads of said locking sleeve being provided on said inwardly turned flange, and wherein one of the extension pieces is provided with a radially outwardly extending flange on its rearward end which is engageable with the inwardly turned flange of the locking sleeve when said locking sleeve is moved to its rearward position, thereby serving as a stop therefor and 6 preventing disengagement of said locking sleeve from said last-mentioned extension piece,
