Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
T. D. RICHARDSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM RICHARDSON, OF
' Y SAME PLACE.
PEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,793, dated October 11, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS D. RICHARD- soN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Article of Manufacture, the Same being a Combination of a Pen, Pencil, and Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specilication, in which- Figure l, is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a wooden handle or holder which may be of taper form as shown in the drawings and B, is a metal tube encompassed by a ring a, to which a pen slide o, is attached, the pen slide being within tube B, and of the usual form.
Within the tube B, a tube C is placed. This tube C, is considerably smaller in diameter than tube B, but is somewhat longer,-v
see Fig. 2. The outer ends of the two tubes B, C, are flush with each other. The inner tube C, contains the pencil slide c, which slide has a projection d, that extends through a slot c, in both tubes and by which the pencil slide is shoved into and out from the tube C. The rivets f, that attach the ring ai,
to the pen slide Z), pass through a longitudinal slot g, in the tube B.
The inner part it, of the tube C, that projects beyond the tube B, forms the means for attaching the tube B, to the handle or holder A. This part h, of the tube is fitted in a recess 2'., in the handle and a pin y', passes through the handle and the part 7L, of tube C, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The pencil slide c, it will be understood requires to be much longer than the pen slide, as the former has a screw rod within it to adjust the leads, hence the extension of the tube C, beyond B, serves a twofold purpose, to wit, the securing of the tube to the handle or holder and the aiiording of sufhcient length to the pencil slide tube without increasing' the length of the tube B. It will be seen therefore that the pen and pencil slides may be used in a short tube and a neat and useful implement obtained.
I do not claim broadly and separately any of the parts herein shown and describedr- But Havino thus described my invention, I claim an desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
The arrangement and combination of the elongated tube (7L), with the handle A, and tubes B, C, as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
THOS. D. RICHARDSON.
