Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
'JOHN H. KNAPP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.A
PEN AND Pl-:NclL CASE.,
S pecication forming part of Letters Patent No. 15,660, dated September 2, 1856.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. KNAPP, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pen and Pencil Case; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, said drawing being a longitudinal section of my improvement.
My invention consists in having the penslide ttted over atube which incloses the pencil-slide, the parts being peculiarly arranged, as will be hereinafter fully shown and described, so that the case may be made extremely short and still rendered capable of being extended by means of the usual slide.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the external case, and B represents a tube, which is secured permanently within the case A, the tube B having a reserve Cfor leads in its upper part.
D represents the pen-slide, which is fitted on the tube B, said slide being operated or moved in and out by a sliding band E, which encompasses the case A and is connected by rivets with the pen-slide D, as usual.
Within the tube B a smaller tube F is permanently secured. The tube F has the pencil-slide G placed Within it, and said tube has a longitudinal slot d made in its side, through which apin b on the pencil-slide G passes. The tube F is encompassed by a tube H, which has a spiral slot c cut through it, the pin b also projecting through the spiral slot c. The tube F is attached to a circular plate d at the lower end of the case A, and the tube H has a pin e attached to it', which pin passes through a slot f in the tube B.
From t-he above description it will be seen that by turning either the plate d or case A the pencil-slide may be moved in and out from the case A, and that by operating the sliding V band E the pen-slide D may be moved inand out at the opposite end of the case.
The advantage of the above invention is that by having the pen-slide D iitted over the tube B, which incloses the pencil-slide, the case AAA may be made extremely short, because no additional room is required for the operation of the pen-slide, that working directly over or around the device which operates the pencilslide.
The usual extension-slide I may be used, so that the case may be lengthened when required. A
I do not claim the manner of operating the pencil-slide-viz., by the spirally-slotted tube H and the straight slotted tube F-for that has been previously used, and the pen-slide D is also Well known andin common use; but,
Having t-hus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isM
Placing the pen-slide D over or upon the tube B, which incloses the slotted tubes F H,
the above parts being arranged, as shown, so that the pencil-slide is shoved out at one end of the case A and the pen-slide at the oppo-` site end and the Working parts rendered so compact that an extremely portable and extensive case is obtained, as herein shown and described.
JOHN H. KNAPP.
