Description

A. SOHABPER.
DIVIDERS.
No. 19,589. Q Patented Mar. 9, 1858.
A. SGHAEFER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATHEMATICAL DIVIDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,589, dated March 9, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON SOHAEFER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dividers or Drawing-Compasses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of ref erence marked thereon.
In dividers provided with pencil or pen legs, to draw pencil or ink circles, the legs are made in two parts with a joint so as to be able to set the lower parts of said legs, as near as possible perpendicular at any opening the legs may have. To insure always this perpendicular position of the .lower parts of the legs, whatever may be the open ing of the divider, and to make the same self-operating, is the nature of my invention. For that purpose I apply a parallelogram a, Z), Z) a. to the divider," of which the joint pin, 2, of the arms, a, and b, is fixed in a stanchion, P, attached to the pin, 3, upon which the legs A and B which form the divider turn. The lower part of this stanchion P is provided with a slot 0, in which the joint pin, H, of the arms a and 6, works up and down and is guided. The arms, a and b, are lengthened, and connected with the secondary legs A and B at a distance below their joints 5 and 6, equal to the distance from the pin, 2, to the pin, 3. By this arrangement the legs, A and B, will always be kept perpendicular with each other, whatever opening may be given to the primary legs A and B. 1
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The application and use of a parallelogram to dividers in the manner and for the purpose specified.
