BUTTON-FASTENING.

Specicaton of Letters Patent No. 20,707, dated June 29, 1858.

T o all whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, LESTER G'ooDwIN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stud and Button LFastenings Operating from the Outside of the Garment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figures l, 2, 3, 4, 5, G, 7, 8, 9, 10 represent the several parts in various positions the better to be understood; while Figs. ll, and 12, are the ones particularly referred to in the description of construction, and claim.

Same letters refer to similar parts in all the figures.

O0nstmcz'0n.-Embrace one perpendicular leg (A) of a right-angular piece (M D E), by, and let it turn, in a band (B) secured to the perpendicular leg of another right-angular stationary piece (C) the angles (D) being at the top, and nearly in the same horizontal plane. Secure the lower end of the movable leg to an end of a long spring (E F) which extends horizontally. Secure the lower end (G) of the stationary leg permanently to a horizontal surface (H K,), over, and near which the spring (F E) of the movable leg (A) sweeps. Make a hollow or a projection (L) at the horizontal surface (H K) to prevent motion of the spring (E F) until relieved.

Operation-When the horizontal arms (D M) are pointing in nearly the same direction, (as at Fig. 11. g) they can be passed together through a sufficient aperture; then,

one arm (D M) can be extended in another A direction (Fig. l2) (O N) to prevent withdrawal, and is fastened in that position by the spring (E F) easily passing the obstruction (L) on the surface (H K), from which it can return only when elevated from it.

Fig. 11, represents the parts in position for insertion or withdrawal. Fig. 1Q, represents the parts as fastened; and is the position in which the parts are to be, when worn, or in use.

I do not claim, as my invention, the employment of two parallel stationary bars with arms forcibly bent at right angles -in different directions to fasten, and which must be forcibly bent back again when removed, for that is recognized as a Very old idea, but the following is my claim.

)Vhat I claim as my improvement, and invention, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

Making one right angled piece (M D A E) movable on its perpendicular leg, in, and embraced by a band (B) to another right angular pieces, (M D C G) and depending upon it for support; and the controlling of the position of the movable right angled piece by a spring (F E) and the confining the spring (F E), by obstruct-ions (L) on the surface (H K) swept by it, substantially, combined as represented in Figs. 11 and 12.
