Description

O. G. PARTRIDGE'.
(No Model.)
TOP.
No. 593,238. Patented Nov. 9, 1897.
EN 08 M0 I Br I v 4 J #ITOfi/VUS WITNESSES: (0.
UNITED STATES trim CHARLES OATLIN PARTRIDGE, OF HYDE PARK, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,238, dated November 9, 1897.
Application filed December 17, 1896. Serial No 615,959 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES CATLIN PAR- TRIDGE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hyde Park, county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Tops, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of toys designated as tops, the object thereof being to provide an article of this character which while having the general external appearance of an ordinary top is constructed in such a manner as to contain the cord and button for spinning the same, whereby these said parts will always be at hand ready for use.
The invention will be hereinafter fully de- I scribed, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawin g,for1nin g part of this specification, the figure is a vertical sectional elevation of my improved top.
In the practice of my invention an ordinary conical top A is provided centrally with a recess or chamber B, which said chamber is provided at its inlet or top portion with an interior screw-thread b. Engaging with this threaded portion is a cap 0, which is provided with athreaded projection c. This cap has a convex outer surface for finishing the contour of the top, and it is preferably provided with a recess a, which communicates with the recess 13, formed in thebody of the top, whereby suificient space for containing the string or cord D and its attached button I) is provided.
A spool E is mounted within the recess 13, upon which the cord D is to be wound. This spool is mounted upon a spindle F, which has a spiral spring G coiled around its lower end for forcing the spool E upwardly and outwardly, whereby when thecap G is removed the spool will be projected beyond the upper edge of the top into a handy position for winding and unwinding.
In using the top it is obvious that the cap 0 can be readily unscrewed for removing the cord and its button, after which, the cap bein g again adjusted to place, the spinning process will be carried out in the same manner as in spinning an ordinary top.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a top comprising a re cessed body, and a removable cover or cap having a recess therein; with a string and button normallyiretained, respectively within the recesses of the top and cover, and means Within the top for maintaining the string in a wound or coiled condition, said means consisting of a spool mounted on a spindle journaled therein, and means for forcing said spool upward in the top, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name,in pres ence of two witnesses, this 12th day of December, 1896.
CHARLES (lll'lLlN PAR'IRIDGE.
