NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN STANTON AND CHARLES RELING, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,282, dated April 3, 1883.
n Application tiled January 2,1883. (Model.)
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN STANTON and CHARLES RELING, both of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Toy, of which the following is a specication.
Ourinvention consists, essentially, of' a shell or tube having the outward semblance of' a cigar, whose open butt or mouth is provided with a plug or stopper whose inner end is connected by spiral spring with the other end of the tube through theinstrumentality of a wire or rod that constitutes the means of releasing the plug, so as to permit thespiral springto project it into space, and thus cause an amusing surprise.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View ot' our toy in its closed or normal condition. Fig. 2 is a partly-sectional elevation of the same in its opened or discharged77 condition.
A is a shell or tube in form ot a cigar, and may be composed of any suitable material, such as sheet metal, wood, or paper. The said tube is wrapped with leaf-tobacco, or with paper that has the semblance of tobacco, as at B. The open mouth or butt of the said tube is furnished with a plug or stopper, C, which is preferably of india-rubber, but may be of cork, wood, or other suitable material. At the conical or tip end ofthe said tube is a minute orifice, a, for the trigger D, which consists of a wire rod having a Poop or other enlargement, d, at its outer end, both to afford a convenient means ot' manipulation and to prevent it slipping into the tube. Another loop, d', within the tube enables the engagement of the tail end ofa spiral spring, E, Whose other extremity is secured within the plug C. A knob, d, preferably of spherical form, on the extremity of the trigger D nearest the butt, holds said trigger central within the spring, and consequently central with respect to the containingtube.
The toy being in its normal condition, as shown in Fig. 1, is in the act ot' 'presentation as a cigar thrown into the unexpected condition shown in figure, thus creating a diversion or amusing surprise to the bystanders.
NVe are aware of the familiar use of a secret spring in toys-such as that known as Jack in the Box-to produce the sudden appearance of a concealed ngure.
We claim- 1. The toy consisting of tube or shell A B a, in semblance of a cigar, and having a plug or stopper, C, connected by spiral spring E with trigger D, substantially as set forth.
il. 1n combination with the shell A B ai, stopper C, and spiral spring E, the trigger or pusher D, to which tlhe inner end of the spring is attached in the manner designated.
3. 1n combination with the shell A B a, stopper C, and the spiral spring E, the trigger or pusher D, having the enlarged extremities d d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony ofwhich invention we hereunto set our hands.
