ATTORNEYS Andrew Gould Patented Oct. 8, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
10 simple in construction, durable in use, efficient in operation, amusing to children and others,
and economical in manufacture.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, appended claims and annexed drawing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof, partly in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional View taken on the 25 line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the operation of my invention.
In practicing my invention, I provide a body 4 constructed of upper and lower connected layers 30 of a suitable material 5, for instance,'Cellophane or the like. Said body is of a bird-like configuration in plan to simulate the appearance of a bird and comprises head and body sections 6 and 1 respectively. The body section 6 is fashioned with oppositely disposed wing portions 8 and a rearwardly extending tail portion 9.
The head section is constructed of cork ID or the like between the layers of material and is provided, in the upper side thereof, with a slot l I receiving therein a comb or top hiob member l2, the upper end of which extends above the head section B and through the upper layer of material. The rear end of the head section 6 is transversely slotted and receives therethrough the looped section of a substantially U-shaped length of wire I3, the outer end sections of which are curved outwardly to define the outer contour of the wing portions 8 and reinforce the material. The body section is provided with a relatively i0 narrow U-shaped length of wire 14, the free ends of which are fixed within the rear end of the head section 6 while the looped end is disposed outwardly or beyond the free ends of the length of wire l3. Said wire l4 extends rearwardly and is centrally disposed within the body section 1 to reinforce the latter.
One of the wing portions 8, adjacent the head section 6, has secured thereto the end of a string Hi, the opposite end of the latter being connected to the end of a wand or stick I! which is grasped in the hand of an operator whereby the toy may be whirled about, headforemost, in the atmosphere to simulate the flight of a bird as diagram- 10 matically illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawing.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and efficient toy which when whirled headforemost about in the atmosphere simulates the appearance of a bird in flight and which lends to the general amusement of children and others.
It is also obvious that the invention is not confined to the herein described use therefor as it may be utilized for any purpose to which it is adaptable. It is therefore to be distinctly understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction as illustrated and described, as the same is only illustrative of the principles of operation, which are capable of extended application in advance forms, and that the invention comprehends all construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising, a body constructed of relatively light diaphanous material and having a bird-like configuration, said body fashioned with head and body sections with the latter formed with wing and tail portions, a U-shaped member extending through said head section and terminating at the tip of said wing portions whereby to reinforce the latter, and means connected to one of said wing portions for actuating said body through the air to simulate the flight of a bird, and a relatively narrow U-shaped member connected to said head section and extending through said tail portion for reinforcing of the latter.
2. A toy comprising an aviform body constructed of relatively light material and adapted to simulate the flight of a bird when circumvolated through the air, said body fashioned with head, body and tail sections, and a reenforcing member disposed in a cephalocercal position in said body section and extending through said head and tail sections for effecting confortation of said body and tail sections with respect to said head section.
