UNTTED STATES EEicE,
PATENT TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,420, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed August 10, 1896. Serial No. 602,270. (No model.)
To (025 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BE'RNHARDT E. HENRIK- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Toys; and I hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to toys, and especially to that class which may be denominated noise-producing toys.
It consists in a hollow figure of a living creature-such, for example, as the figure of a roostersaid figure havinga hinged orflexible neck adapting its head to be moved, as in the act of crowing, a sounding device which may be composed of the hollow body of the figure itself or of a separate box or cylinder inserted in said body, a string or cord passing out from the figure and acting, in connection with the sounding body, cylinder, or box, to produce, in conjunction with the same, the desired noise or sound, and a lever within the figure and extending into and-adapted to operate the movable neck of the figure, said lever being connected with the cord, whereby upon operating the cord to produce the sound the lever will be moved to operate the head of the figure, all of which I shall hereinafter fully describe.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and attractive toy adapted to produce a sound which may be more or less an imitation of the natural voice of the creature in the likeness of which the toy is constructed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of my toy. Fig. 2 is a modification of same.
A represents a living creature of any suitable nature. For the sake of illustration I have here shown it in the shape of a rooster. The body of this figureis hollow, and its neck a is jointed or hinged or otherwise rendered flexible in such a manner that its head a may be thrown up and down. Within the body of this figure is a sounding cylinder or box B? having a thin or vibratable diaphragm or head I) at its rear end, which said head may be of any suitable material, such as skin, or it may be a thin plate of metal. ward end of this cylinder is hinged the lever O, which reaches up into and bears against To the forthe neck of the figure A at a point forward of its hinge or flexible joint.
D is a string which is connected with this lever and thence extends backwardly through the sounding-head b of the cylinder or box B and projects from the rear of the figure with a sufficient length to enable the fingers of head back after the manner of an ordinary crowing rooster. By a proper movement of the fingers, with suitable intermissions, the sound maybe caused to resemble the natural voice of the rooster. I
In some cases, as I have shown in Fig. 2, the hollow body of the figure may constitute the sounding cylinder or box, which may be accomplished by making the figure of suitable material, such as papiermach, thin metal, or other resonant material, and-thus dispensing with a separate sounding-box. In such case the string would be secured to the leverin the same manner and pass out through an orifice in the figure and serve the same purpose as heretofore described, the rear wall of the figure serving as the diaphragm in this instance. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy comprising a hollow resonant figure having a vibratable member, a head with a flexible or hinged neck, a lever within the figure, hinged at its lower end and extending upwardly into the neck and havingits free end to bear against the same, to throw the head up, and a cord attached to the lever at a point above its hinge end and passing outwardly through the vibratable member whereby it may be operated to cause the figure to give forth a sound.
2. A toy comprising a hollow figure, said figure having a jointed or flexible neck whereby the head thereof may be thrown upwardly, a sounding box or cylinder located Within the hollow body of the figure, having a vibratable member, a movable lever Within the figure and adapted to bear against the neck of the figure to throw its head up, and a string secured to said lever and passing through the vibratable member of the cylinder or box to the exterior of the figure, Whereby when operated, a sound is produced, and at the same time the lever is operated to throw up the head of the figure.
A toy comprising a hollow figure, said figure having a flexible or jointed neck adapting the head thereof to be thrown upwardly,
of the figure, and a string connected with 20 said lever, and passing backwardly through the diapl'iragm or head of the cylinder and to the exterior of the figure.
In .Witness whereoi'l have hereunto set my hand.
