Description

1. A. GRAN DALL.

Patented Aug. 3,1875.
No.l66,344.
J72 21min? m'fneaaea J. 1?. Com/ML UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE A. ORANDALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND SYLVANUS WHITE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAST ANETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,344, dated August 3, 1875; application filed July 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, JESSE A. ORANDALL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State o'f New York, have invented a new and Improved Double Oastanet, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is an edge view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of my improved double castanet.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to a new double clapping-tool or castanet; and consists in forming at opposite ends of a handle rigidly projecting blades, and in hinging thereto vibrating plates, which, when the handle is agitated, serve as clappers. By having a clapper at each end. of the handle, a skillful person is enabled to produce a harmonious double rhythm, more particularly so if the clapper at one end is made longer or thicker than the other, to produce a difi'erent sound.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the handle of my improved double castanet. B and O are blades, projecting, respectively, from the opposite ends of the handle, and made of wood or other fit material. 1) D are plates of wood or other material, pivoted to arms a a, that project from the blade B. E E are similar plates of wood or other material, pivoted to arms I) I), that project from the blade O.
I prefer to make one blade and its plate or plates longer than the other, or thicker, in order to cause the two ends of the instrument to produce different sounds. The operator will thereby be enabled to produce a double rhythm, one slower than the other, and hearing' somewhat the same relation thereto as the bass in music bears to the soprano.
Instead of having two pivoted plates, D D or E E, at each or either end, there may be but one used; and the instrument may also answer by omitting the blade between the pivoted plates, allowing the latter to strike each other. The plates are, by preference, pivoted to the arms a. b, which project from the blades; yet they may also be pivoted to the body of the handle, or otherwise properly connected.
I claim as my invention- A double castanet consisting of a handle, A, provided at each end with olappers l) E, substantially as specified.
J. A. ORANDALL.
