VIOLIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,814, dated March 1, 1898.

Beit known that I, J ULIUs WAcHsMANN, l

a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Violins, of which the following is a specification.

The principal objects of my invention are to secure an equal distribution of vibration throughout the violin-body and at the same time to'strengthen the violin structure.

It consists in placing within the body of the violin, about midway of the open chamber therein, a longitudinal bar and providing a resonant connection between said longitudinal bar and the vertical post which extends from the back to the front of the violinbody. This longitudinal bar strengthens the Violin-body and helps to resist the strains which come upon it. The arrangement specified has the effect also to smooth the tones of the instrument and give equality to the soundproducing qualities of the strings. A violin embodying my invention has also a stronger vibration and the sound therefrom will carry farther, as it is called, this being due to the connection specified between the post and the horizontal bar,

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar figures of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a violin; Fig. 2, a plan View 0f a violin-body with the back removed, showing the interior, which is provided with devices peculiar to my present invention; and Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view of said body as seen from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2.

The violin in its general construction and arrangement is or may be of any usual ordesired form. It has a post 3 extending between the back 1 and the front 2, about midway of the structure, as shown. A horizontal bar 4 also extends throughout the chamber lengthwise and transversely of or at right Extending out from angles with the post 3.

the post 3 is a wing 5, having a notch in its side, adapted to pass over the bar 4, the construction and arrangement being such that there is a light contact between said wing at the bottom of the notch therein and the said longitudinal bar. Said wing is preferably very thin and composed of vibrant or resonant wood. The bar 4 ought also to be composed of similar wood.

Actual practical use has demonstrated that by the arrangement described I secure the advantages hereinbefore stated.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1.V In a violin or such like instrument, the combination, of the body of the instrument, the bar at extending longitudinally within said body and supported in suitable seats in its end pieces, a vertical post extending from the bottom to the top of said body about midway thereof and to one side of said longitudinal bar, and a thin resonant wing 5 secured to the side of said vertical post and havinga notch in its opposite end which embraces said longitudinal bar, the adjustment being such that there is a light contact between the bottom of said notch and said bar, substantially as described and for the purpose speciiied.

2. The combination with a violin or similar instrument, of a longitudinal bar or brace within its body, a vertical post, and a wing of thin resonant material secured to one and formed with a notch in its other end which embraces the other., the bottom of said notch lightly contacting with the member embraced, substantially as described and for the purposes specied.
