Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 20, 1913. Serial No. 796,365.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Etowah, in the county of Henderson and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Violins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in musical instruments and especially in the provision of a body for a violin and the object in view is to produce a simple and eflicient device of this nature so constructed and shaped as to generally improve upon the tonal qualities of the instrument.
The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 4: is a central.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and B designate respectively the top and bottom sections of the shell, the latter being made of two parts of wood. Each section is hollow or grooved out upon its inner side as shown, having an interior concaved surface and convexed upon its outer face. The two sections are held together by means of dowel pins 0 which, with suitable adhesive material such as glue, will serve to hold the two sections securely together. A tug end pin D, it will be noted, is made up of sections and extends the width of the two sections and the opposite end of the shell is provided with a projection E to which the neck of the violin may be securely held in any manner. It will be noted upon reference to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings that the opposite edges of the shell are provided with concaved recesses N which merge into the faces of the shells.
By the provision of a shell made as shown and described and comprising two sections with the rounded edges and continuous curvature of the sections and provided with but a central seam, the necessity of end and corner blocks is dispensed with, also corners and angles commonly found upon instruments of this nature are dispensed with, thereby generally improving upon the tonal qualities of the shell.
\Vhat I claim to be new is A violin body comprising two shell sections fastened together, having conveXed outer surfaces and concaved inner surfaces, dowel pins holding the sections together, each section having concaved recesses in its edges which merge into the face of the shells of the sections, one end of the shell having integral projections forming an end pin and the lower section having a forwardly eX- tending projection at its other end.
