Description

G. D. REED.
Guitars..rr
N0.l50,355, Patented Apri! 28,1874.
u hre/@Zoff 1u UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE D. REED, OF SPRINGFIELD, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, JULIUS E. GRAVES, AND WILLARD BAILEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUITARS.
` Specification forn'ing part of Litters Patent No. 150,355, dated April 23, 1874; application filed January 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, GEORGE D. REED, of Springfield, in the county of Vindsor and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Guitar; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
vreference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an iinprovemcnt in guitars; and the invention consists ina guitar constructed with its back and sides formed from thin sheet metal, and with its front or sounding-board formed of wood, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of my guitar; and Fig. 2, a cross-section of the same, taken in line @o w.
Similarletters of reference indicate like parts in the two iigures.
The back A is formed of the required size and shape from thin sheet metal, and the sides B are made from one continuous strip of metal, bent to the requisite form, and soldered or otherwise secured to the back A. To the upper edges of the sides B is secured, in any desir able manner, a wooden face or sounding-board, O, provided with the usual orifice g, for the emission of sound. To the sounding-board is affixed the ordinary string-cleat a and neck b, the neck being provided with the usual frets and head c for the pegs f.
A guitar constructed as described above will be found strong, sonorous, and comparatively ineXpensNe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
A guitar constructed with metallic back and sides, in combination with a wooden soundin board, substantially as described.
GEORGE D. REED.
