B. .J LUMLEY. WHISTLING TOY No. 522,264. Patented July 3, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE}.
EDWIN JOHNSON LUMLEY, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA,
ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES B. BROOKES, OESAME PLACE.
WHISTLING TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 522,264, dated July 3, 1894. p 7
Application filed October 2, 1889. Serial No. 325,785. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN JOHNSON LUM- LEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVhistling Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in'the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of a Whirligig embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, taken on the line as w in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A represents the whirligig-a disk of cardboard or other suitable material, whose sides may, if desired, be ornamented by circles, as 1 2 3 4 5, of difierent colors.
B B represent two whistles, each of which consists of a thin concavo-convex circular piece of metal, preferably tin, having a mouth or hole, I), near the periphery. These whistles are secured to one side of the Whirligig at points directly opposite each other, with the concave side next the disk, the holes in both being on one side of an imaginary line, as w as, drawn through the center of the disk. These whistles are secured to the Whirligig preferably by means of an annular piece of thick paper, P, passed over each andpasted to the disk, as shown.
The hirligig A is perforated centrally in two places, as at a, through which perfora- 3 5 tions a doubledcord, O, is passed in the usual manner, the cord being provided at each end with a handle or knob, 0; and to prevent the cord from cutting through the space between the two perforations a, I paste a thin strip, 3, 40
of wood or other suitable material, to the disk.
In operating this toy in the manner usual with whirligigs, the whistles will give out sounds in whichever direction the disk may be revolved-that is to say, one whistle will 5 be sou'nded while revolving in one direction,
and the other will be sounded while revolvside of the disk, and an operating-cord passed through the perforations in the disk.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in 60 presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN JOHNSON LUMLEY.
Witnesses WM. HUNTER MYERS, ALBERT SPEIDEN.
