Be it known that I, MORTON E. CONVERSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the town of Winchendon, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Drums, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates particularly to toy drums and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as hereinafter specified and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a drum embodying my improvement. Fig. 2, is a section through the line 2. 2. of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is aseetion at right angles to Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail on an enlarged scale.

Referring by letter to the drawings A. designates the shell or body portion of the drum, consisting of any suitable material, such for instance, as metal.

A designates the binding hoops, designed to clamp the heads a. in place and a shows the tie cords rove through holes in the hoops.

The heads a are of the usual semi-transparent material or skin which not only serve to drum upon but for a purpose hereinafter specified.

B indicates a sound producing device, such as a whistle, secured to the shell of the drum. The Whistle B consists of two concavo-eonvex portions of metal Z2. b. one of which here shown as the outer portion 12. may be formed integral with the body of the drum by striking up or concaving a portion thereof and the other I). may be secured by solder or otherwise, to the inner side of the body or shell the convex sides being toward the shell A. as plainly shown in Fig. 2. Each whistle portion has an opening through its center so that air may pass through the openings in the disks, and produce a sound.

In the operation of drumming on one of the heads a, air will be alternately drawn and expelled through the device B which will produce a whistling sound; also a whistle sound of varying pitch may be produced by pumping with the hands on one or both of the heads of the drum thus affording amusement.

Another feature of amusement may be provided by securing a picture O to the inner side of the shell A opposite the sound hole and as the heads a. are of a material sufficiently transparent to admit light, it is obvious that by holding the drum or placing it in such position that light may shine through the heads, the picture 0 may be seen by peeping through the opening in the whistle.

Having described my invention, what I 60 claim is 1. The combination with a drum of a whistle consisting of perforated portions on the drum shell substantially as specified.

2. The combination with a drum, of a whistle consisting of two perforated concavo-convex disk portions one formed integral with the shell and the other secured substantially as specified.
