Description
NITE STATES PATENT GFFICE.
WILLIAM H. KLINE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E- HALF TO WILLIAM P. BUSHELL, OF SAME PLACE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,926, dated April 10, 1894.
Application filed April 5, 1893. Serial No. 469,087- (No model.)
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM. H. KLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toys, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates'to improvements in toys of the order of those formed of a disk, and a cord passing through the same near the center thereof, and a whistle on the side of the disk, said cord being twisted and drawn backward and forward, so that the disk rotates in opposite direction, and while it may produce a buzzing sound, the whistleis blown, thus adding to the interesting nature of the toy. Owing to the liability of the whistle to be disengaged from the disk, and thus forcibly and inj uriously strike the player, I have formed the whistle integralwith the disk, and applied a backing thereto,'whereby the whistle is effective, and the toy islight, strong and durable, and presents no exposed edge, which otherwise is of a dangerous nature, owing to its liability to cut and tear that with which it comes in contact.
Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial perspective view of a whistling toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a diametrical section of the body of the toy, and a side elevation of the cord thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corretlOH, a flat peripheral portion, integral-consponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the body of the toy, the same consisting of a metallic disk B, portions of which are struck-up in convex form as at O, and having openings D inthe centers thereof.
E designates a disk of pasteboard or other light material, which is placed back of the disk B, and its periphery is embraced by the rim F of the disk B, said rim being turned over said periphery forming a flat edge, and is clinched on the outer side so as as to be flush therewith. It will be seen that the disk E while in contact with those portions of the disk B, which are notstruck-up, closes the backs of the perforated convexities 0, forming whistles of the same.
Passing through openings in the disks nea the centers thereof, are cords G, which are twisted and their ends drawn outwardly, and then permitted to approach each other, thus unwinding and winding, whereby the body of the toy is rotated in opposite directions. This causes the body to make a buzzing noise, and the whistles to blow, thus producing an interesting toy, it being evident that the disk B may be made of thin metal, and the disk E of lighter material, the two disks being united as one, forming a strong body, while the whistles are integral with the disk B,and add but slight weight to the same, while they are not liable to break or fly off, and serve in great measure as crimps, which greatly stiffen the disk. The central openings of the disks are providedwith eyelets or bushings H, of
A metallic disk having a flat central porvexities between the center and periphery, and an inturned rim in combination with a flat backing which rests against the central and peripheral portions of said disk, covers the rear of the convexities and has its peripheral portion embraced by said rim, the central portions of the disk and backing having an operating cord passed through them, all'as described.
