\M. NUDELMAN wa mnme TOY Filed Feb. 3, 1930 INVENTOR.
A TTORNE Y.
aim d Ma s, 1931 I i 1 803 38 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Application filed February 3,1930. 'seriai No. 425,532.
'This invention relates to certain new and sections, and by again applying tension to useful improvements in whirling toys, the the cord the disc will whirl reversely at high peculiarities of which will be ereinafter speed. Thus by alternately tensioning' and fully described and claimed. slackening the supporting cord, the disc will The main objects of my invention are first, continue whirling in alternate directions. to provide an improved Whirligig; secondly, My improved form of disc consists of a to provide a manually twisted multiple cord flat circular side member 3 having a flange i for said Whirligig adapted to produce a humadapted to fit over a flange of smaller diamming, whistling or musical sound thereby; eter 5 on the opposite side member 6 that if thirdly, to provide two colors thereon adapted spaces the sides apart, asshown in Fig. 4- to display a third color when blended by This double flange increases the weight at the whirling; and fourthly, to produce a rattling periphery of the disc and improves the whirlaccompaniment to said sounds. ing motion.
In the accompanying drawings in which In the side faces of one or both of these like reference numerals indicate correspondflanged members are formed openings which ing parts, will produce a whistling, humming or musi- Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of my cal sound when the Whirligig is rapidly rodevice; p tated in either direction. Such openings may Fig. 2, an outside face view of one .side be circular as at7 or they may be of other form member of my Whirligig; and are preferably struck up and bent out Fig. 3, an inside view of the other side ward so as to form reeds 8' radially mounted member; and on the disc face and integral or otherwise Fig. 4, a center sectional view of the tWo with the face of each member. I have also members as assembled. I shown a rectangular opening 9 provided with T5 My device belongs to the class of whirlin double reeds 10 circumferentially located as toys that are supported by the .hands and shown in Fig.2. .The said reed may be-of manually operated to roduce a whirling moother material than that of the disc members tion upon a whirligig by alternately tensionif desired. a 'ing and slackening a multiple cord support- For adding to the appearance of this whirli- 30 ing said whir1igig. p gig I provide portions on each face bearing so Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1' --two opposite colors such as blue on the segdesignate two rings adapted for insertion of ment ll-and yellow on thesegment 12 of the afinger on each hand.v These rings thusmanface as indicated in Fig. 2. This The said inner flange 5 or other portion of disc has holes located on a diameter of the the disc 6, is provided with corrugations 13 disc and equidistant from its center through formingan irregular inner surface as shown which the strands of said cord pass as shown in Fig; 3. One or more balls 14 preferably in Fig. 1 and'separate them somewhat, so metallic, are located in my hollow disc;and that by swinging said disc on the cord held when impinging on said corrugations under loosely, the cord will become twisted op orapid rotation of the disc, a continuous rat- 45 sitely in the sections on each side of the disc. tling soundwill be produced which contrasts By manual. tension on the twisted cord, with the wind sounds of the openings before. rotation will be iven to the discas the described and serves as an accompaniment to twisted cord unwinds. The weight ofthe such sounds. disc causes it to twist the sections of the cord By making the reeds 8 longer than the reed again in reverse directions in the respective 8 I produce a different vibration and tone as regards these two forms, which can be made to harmonize and im rove the quality of the resulting wind soun when the Whirligig is rotating;
5 I claim:
1. A whirling toy comprising a hollow disc consisting of two flat circular sides and overlapped flanges spacing them apart and atfording weight to the periphery,-the inner flange being corrugated and the sides having diametrically spaced matching holes, a double cord passing through said holes for manual operation, and a metallic ball loosely disposed in the space between said sides and flanges and adapted to impinge successively the said corrugations under rotation of the disc, substantially as described.
2. A whirling toy comprising a hollow disc consistingof two flat circularsides having flanges extending from said sides of different diameter and similar width, the smooth outer flange fitting over the inner flange, the inner flange spacing the sides apart and being corrugated, and the sides having portions struck up forming openings with reed edges integral therewith and having d-iametrical matching holes, a double cord disposed in said holes for manual operation, anda ball loosely disposed in the spaces between said sides adapted to rattle around the said corrugations under rotation of the disc, substantially as 'described.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed mysignature.
I MORRIS NUDELMIAN.
