M. DUFPNER. ADVERTISING DEVICE.
No. 603,057. Patented Apr. 26, 1898.
ma Q WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT @rrrcn,
MATTHEW DUFFNEB, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,057, dated April 26, 1898. Application filed April 5, 1897. Serial No. 630,891. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW DUFFNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in advertising devices, and has for its object to provide a device havin g a display-surface, together with an object or figure, if so desired, each of which may be mounted upon a common shaft and revolved by means of a string or other suitable device attached thereto and adapted to rewind itself upon the shaft, through the revolutions thereof, after the string has been unwound from the shaft, and thus impart a continuous motion to the display-surface as lon gas the string is operated in order to blend the varied colors thereon into a common color.
The invention aims also to construct a device which may be termed a Whirligig and used as a toy, although the primary object is to provide a device that will be novel for advertisin g purposes; and to this end the invention consists in the novel construction, combin ation, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device held in the hand ready to be operated. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of a portion thereof to show the manner in which the string is wound upon the operating-shaft. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my improved device, showing a pair of dumb-bells of unequal weight arranged on the upper end of the shaft.
Referring now to the drawings by referenceletters, aindicates the operating-shaft, which has secured to its upper end a cross-piece a, which carries dumb-bells b and 19 of unequal weight, and which are provided with apertures c to receive a reed which will give forth sound as the bells revolve, and by reason of these dumb-bells being of unequal weight the momentum attain ed thereby will be retained during the operation of the string.
The device is held by means of a ball or top shaped device (I, which is arranged on the shaft a between the bulb cand a collar c,form ed on the shaft a, said ball 01 being provided with a central chamber f to permit the winding upon the shaft of the operating-string ,which is attached to said shaft, extends downwardly through the ball, and is provided on its outer end with a button h to form a suitable grip to hold the string.
In case it is desired to use the dumb-bells for a further advertisement than what it may be made to represent the same may be provided With varied colors to blend as the dumbbells revolve or with cheap compositions which would sparkle sufficiently to represent precious stones, obtain a continuous scintillation as the figure revolves, and present a novel attraction to the eye.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a shaft a, having secured on its top a cross-piece a, which carries dumb-bells l) and 5 of unequal weight, and which may be provided with an aperture 0 to receive a reed which will give forth a sound as the bells revolve, and by reason of these dumb-bells being of diiferent sizes an optical eifect is produced when the device is rotated. It will be observed that this construction may be employed by enlarging the device so as to be used as an exerciser, if so desired.
It will also be observed that various changes maybe made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a toy consisting of a shaft, a cross-piece ct secured to one end, hemispherical bodies of unequal weight secured to the ends of said cross-piece, said hemispherical bodies being provided with openings 0 in which are secured reeds, sleeve provided with an opening to receive the shaft,
IOC.
2 central chamber, an opening through the In testimony whereof I affix my signature side of the sleeve communicating with said chamber, an operating-string passing through said opening and SGCLll'GdlZO the shaft, 21. ball 5 attached to the lower end of the shaft, said hemispherical bodies producing a noise when the operating-string is pulled.
