(Application filed om. 2a, 1900 (No lodei.)
LOUIS A. BOEHME, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 668,829, dated February 26, 1901.
Application filed October 26, 1900. Serial No. 34,506. No model.)
To ctZZ whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. BOEHME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Bandalore toys, as generally constructed, are formed of wood, some being made from two pieces suitably secured together at their central portions and some from a single piece of material, the usual deep peripheral groove being, of course, present in both constructions. Such toys are usually made of cheap light wood and are liable to warp to some extent and are also liable to have their edges chipped or broken, which warping or damaging is apt to interfere with or prevent the free winding and unwinding of the cord that is attached to the grooved wheel. Such toys also are sometimes weighted to operate better.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide means for effectually protecting the edges of the wheel in this class of toys and at the same time and by the same means add sufficient weight to the wheel to cause it to operate in a satisfactory manner.
Another object of my invention is to add to a toy of this class means for producing a revolving fire effect, which under certain conditions will add much to the pleasure of the child using the toy.
These objects I accomplish as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described.
That which I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the hub portion, taken in a plane parallel with. the groove of the wheel. Fig. 3
is a vertical cross-section at line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of one of the edge rings.
Referring to said drawings, A indicates the wheel, formed, as shown, of a single piece of wood, but which may be formed of two pieces suitably united, if desired. The wheel is provided with the usual groove a, which should extend well into the wheel.
I) indicates the central hub portion to which one end of the operating-cord is to be attached.
0 indicates the operating-cord referred to and is preferably provided at its free end with a finger-ring d.
At each side of the groove (1 the edge of the wheel is cut away to form an annular recess e, (see Fig. 3,) in each of which recesses fits a metallic ring f, split, oas shown, to enable it to be sprung upon the wheel into its recess 6 and there held. These rings clamping firmly upon the wheel prevent the wood from warping, prevent the edges of the wheel from becoming damaged, and add sufficient weight to the wheel to insure it operating satisfactorily.
g g indicate small staples driven into opposite sides of the wheel, at or near the center thereof. A small pin or brad or other device might be employed instead of the staple.
h indicates a string of tow or other suitable combustible or inflammable material.
The operation of toys ofthis class is well understood and need not therefore be here described. When the ends of the string 71 are lighted and the wheel rotated to wind and unwind the operating-cord c, it is evident that an effect as of a circle of fire will be produced, the size of such circle continually diminishing as the string burns away.
That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The hereindescribed toy, consisting of the wheel A, having the deep central groove a, and the grooves 6, formed in the peripheral edges of the wheel, combined with the split metal rings f seated within said edge grooves and embraced upon opposite sides by the curved walls forming said grooves, whereby said rings are retained in position, and the cord a, secured to the wheel and adapted to be coiled within the said deep central groove, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described toy, consisting of a wheel having a deep central groove, in combination with a cord secured to the wheel and adapted to be coiled within said groove, and an inflammable or combustible piece of material secured to the side of the Wheel and adapted to be rotated therewith, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described toy, consisting of the Wheel A, having a deep central groove a, and peripheral grooves 6, split metal rings f, sprung into said peripheral grooves, a cord 0, secured at one end to the Wheel within the :0 central groove, and a flexible strip of combustible material secured to the side of the Wheel at the axis thereof, substantially as described.
