' THOMAS HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 645,919, dated March 20, 1900. Application filed November 15, 1899.- Serial No. 737,091. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS HOLMES, a citi zen of theUnited States of America,residingat New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the. following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to that class known as battledore and shuttlecock.
The object of the invention is to provide a shuttlecock which consists of a solid rubber ball with dependent wings or guiding-blades formed in the shape of fans having their centers creased. The guide blades are six in number and are colored red, white, and blue,
thus giving the American colors as the ball is forced up in the air by the battledore and caused to spin around by the blades.
While I have designated the colors red, White, and blue,other colors may be employed to represent other countries or any combination may be used to give a pleasing efiect to the eye.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the particular construction of the various parts and in the novel manner of combination and arrangement of said parts, all of which will be more fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the shuttlecock. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the battledore.
Referring by letters to the drawings, A represents the body of the shnttlecock, which comprises a solid-rubber ball having depend .ent-wings or guiding-blades B formed thereon in a circular line. The guide-blades are substantially fan shaped and are creased in the center, as shown at C. These blades are tinted each with a distinctive color, so as to give the effect of red, white, and blue or any other suitable combination as the ball spins up when driven by the battledore and down by the force of gravity. It will thus be seen that I provide an improved shuttlecock which is exceedingly cheap and simple in its construction.
I deem the foregoing explanation sufficiently plain that the invention will be readily understood by all conversant in such matters, the extreme simplicity rendering an elaborate description unnecessary.
Having thus described the various features of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a shuttlecock, a solid-rubber ball having dependent guiding-blades formed in a circular line thereon, the said guiding-blades being creased in their centers, and having rounded ends, substantially as shown and described.
THOMAS HOLMES;
