TOY HORN.
APPLICATION mio FEB. 1o. 1917.

WITN ESSES ATTQRNEY lllhillylf @TATE PATENT @lhlhlllttllo HERBERT E. ENCK, OF ASHLANHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 MPROVED MANUFACTURNG CO.,
OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
TOY HORN.
Application filed February 10, 1917.
To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. ENGR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Toy Horn, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to toy horns.
An object of the invention is to provide a construction which can be safely used or played by a child without danger of injuring its throat from the horn by falling or running against anything.
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the mouth piece is located at the center and from each end of which projects a bell or cone, provided with a reed or whistle of appropriate construction, the reeds or whistles having tones of different pitch, whereby a harmonious musical sound or combination of tones is obtained, instead of the monotonous tone characteristic of a single horn.
The horn is also very practical for use in crowds whereby the danger of hurting anybody is reduced to a minimum.
To more clearly illustrate my invention, I have, in the accompanying drawing, shown one embodiment of the same, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the same; and
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same.
In this embodiment of the invention, there has been provided a central cylindrical mouth piece 1 of wood, or other suitable material. This mouth piece has open ends 2 and 3. The central portion of the mouth piece is provided with a hole A through which air is forced for vibrating the reeds or whistles. This air is supplied by applying the lips directly to the cylindrical mouth piece, instead of providing` a special stem projecting from the hole for this purpose, as in some constructions.
A pair of conical horns 5 and 6 have their reduced ends fixed within the open ends 2 and 3 of the cylindrical mouth piece. The adjacent ends of the horns are spaced from each other and are arranged symmetrically upon opposite sides of an axial line passing through the hole 4. The reduced portions of the horns are provided with sound producing devices such as reeds or whistles 7 and 8, one whistle or reed having a tone Specification of Letters Patent.

of different pitch from the other, whereby a harmonic musical sound is produced. The harmonic sound may be loud or soft, as dcsired.
While I do not intend to limit myself to any particular form of whistle or reed, ll have therein shown the body portion of each as having a circumferential rib 9 fitting the interior of the horn and an axial passage 10. The inner end of the passage is closed by a rubber strip 11, which is bent around the end of the body portion and held within the groove 12 by means of string 13, or the like.
The device may be made from any suitable material. rThe arrangement of horns and mouth piece in which the mouth is applied to the central portion thereof provides a construction which extends crosswise of the face and should the child fall, it is obvious that no injury can be done. It is for this reason also that the horn is especially valuable in crowds, where there will be no danger of injury to the throat or mouth by reason of the person blowing the horn striking a person or an obstruction in front of him.
While l have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that l do not desire to be limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, for obvious modications will be apparent to anyone skilled in the art.
What is claimed is 1. A toy horn comprising a mouthpiece open at opposite ends and having an intermediate hole for the application of the mouth of the user, separate horns communieating with the opposite open ends of the mouthpiece, and tone-producing devices in the horns, said mouthpiece and horns being in alinement and the hole in the mouthpiece extending thereinto in a direction perpendicular to the length of the toy.
2. A toy horn having a central mouthpiece and horns projecting from opposite ends thereof with the horns and mouthpiece in alinement, the mouthpiece having an intermediately located hole therein for the application of the mouth of the user directly to the mouthpiece, and the toy being provided with tone-producing devices of dier'ent pitches and individual to respective ends of the toy.
lill) A toy horn comprising an elongated smooth mouthpiece provided With a hole through one side intermediate of its length through which air may be blot-vn by the direct application of the lips of the user to seid mouthpiece, oppositely directed horns having their adjacent ends seated in corresponding ends of the mouthpiece With the horns and mouthpiece in alinement, and sound-producing devices of different pitch located within those ends of the horns connccted to the mouthpiece.
4C. A toy horn comprising a mouth piece having a hole therein for the applica-tion of the mouth of the user, horns projecting 15 in opposite directions from the ends of said mouthpiece, and tone producing devices in the horns.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aixed my signa- 20 ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
